PFEIFFER TOPS PRESBYTERIAN, 15-9, IN DEEP SOUTH MEN’S LACROSSE ACTION

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Pfeiffer University’s men’s lacrosse team earned its first Deep South Conference (DSC) victory of the 2006 campaign with a 15-9 victory over the visiting Blue Hose of Presbyterian College on Saturday afternoon.  The win improves the Falcons to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the DSC, while PC falls to 2-6 on the year and 1-6 in league action.

Pfeiffer took a 3-1 lead in the first period as three Falcons scored.  Sophomore attacker Tim Cassios (St. Albert, Alberta) notched the Blue Hose lone goal at 11:30.

PC’s freshman attacker Tyler Dunn (Cashiers, N.C.) pulled the Blue Hose within one, 3-2, completing a pass from freshman midfielder William Hackett (Nesbit, Miss.) at 14:06 in the second quarter.  However, the Falcons mounted an 8-4 halftime lead as Pfeiffer outscored PC, 5-3, in the second stanza following two goals and an assist from sophomore midfielder Eddie Gourley (Damascus, Md.).

The Falcons shutout the Blue Hose, 3-0, in the third period as junior attacker Robert Bickerstaff (Maitland, Fla.) added a goal and an assist.  In the fourth, PC posted a 5-4 margin in scoring as sophomore attacker Jared Domino (St. Albert, Alberta) tallied two goals.

Pfeiffer out shot the Blue Hose, 40-27, won 22-of-27 face-offs, and scooped up 51 ground balls to PC’s 23.  Freshman Rory Vannais (Shamong, N.J.) won 22-of-29 face-offs for the Falcons.

Gourley finished the game with four goals and an assist as well as four ground balls for Pfeiffer, while Bickerstaff contributed three goals and three assists.  Senior attackers Alexander Daskalow (Berlin, Germany) and Erik Kostek (West Seneca, N.Y.) and sophomore attacker Ryan Chandler (Woodbridge, Va.) each chipped in two goals apiece.  Sophomore Chip Baucom (Chattanooga, Tenn.) made 10 stops in 60 minutes of play.

Domino led the Blue Hose offense with a hat trick, while Cassios finished with a pair of goals and one assist plus three ground balls.  Hackett and Dunn each had a goal and an assist for PC.  Freshman goalie David Hetu (Apex, N.C.) played all 60 minutes, making seven saves. 

The Falcons will travel to Banner Elk, N.C., on Saturday, April 1, to take on Lees-McRae in Deep South action at 2:00.  PC will face Queens University of Charlotte for a league game on Tuesday at 4:00 in Charlotte, N.C.
