WINGATE ROLLS PAST BLUE HOSE, 19-3, IN CLINTON, S.C. – The Wingate University men’s lacrosse team left Old Bailey Stadium with a 19-3 victory over the host Blue Hose of Presbyterian College on Saturday afternoon behind four goals by sophomore attacker Stephen Torkington (Coronado, Calif.). The loss drops PC to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the Deep South Conference (DSC), while Wingate remains undefeated in 2006 at 3-0 and 2-0 in the DSC. The Bulldogs cruised to an 11-0 halftime lead as Wingate exploded for seven unanswered goals in the second quarter. Junior attacker Bryan Safarik (Vancouver, British Columbia), sophomore midfielder Mike Bayliss (Lorton, Va.), and freshman attacker Dan Leber (Orlando, Fla.) each scored two goals apiece for the Bulldogs in the first half. Wingate outscored the Blue Hose, 5-2, and 3-1, in the third and fourth frames, respectively. Sophomore attacker Tim Cassios (St. Albert, Alberta) denied the Bulldogs the shutout with his unassisted goal at 12:52 in the third period. PC was out shot 45-20 by Wingate, while the Bulldogs edged the Blue Hose 51-48 in the ground ball war. Wingate also won 18-of-25 face-offs in the contest as freshman midfielder Bryan Egan (Fairfax, Va.) was 10-of-13 and sophomore midfielder Bob Chinn (Mooresville, N.C.) was 8-of-10. Sophomore attackers Jared Domino (St. Albert, Alberta) and T.J. Scott (Clarence, N.Y.) tallied the other two goals for PC, while freshman attacker Tyler Dunn (Casheirs, N.C.) dished out an assist. Sophomore defender Carl Spilly (Indianapolis, Ind.) picked up 11 loose balls. Freshman goalie David Hetu (Apex, N.C.) played all 60 minutes in goal, making 15 saves and scooping up nine loose balls. Leber finished with five points in the game for the Bulldogs on two goals and three assists, while Safarik chipped in a pair and an assist. Bayliss ended up with two goals and sophomore attacker Kyle Costello (Wilmington, N.C.) handed out a game-high five assists. Defensively, freshman defender Evan Schaller (Kirkville, N.Y.) had eight ground balls and freshman defender Dan Eldridge (Clifton, Va.) caused three turnovers. Sophomore David Suthers (Manassas, Va.) gave up no goals and made four saves in the first half, while freshmen Evan Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Chad Watson (Cary, N.C.) combined for eight stops in the second stanza. The Blue Hose will host Deep South Conference opponent, Lees-McRae College, on Wednesday, March 8, at 3:00 in Old Bailey Stadium. Wingate will host Saint Vincent College on Wednesday as well at 3:30.
