PC Loses Close One To Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. – Tied at 5-5 at halftime, the Belmont Abbey men’s lacrosse team outscored Presbyterian 7-6 in the second half with senior attack C.J. Robinson scoring both of his goals in the final 3:42 as the Crusaders held on for a 12-11 win over the Blue Hose.

The Abbey improves to 3-7, while Presbyterian drops to 3-8.

Presbyterian was led by Sean Mulford (Towson, Md.) and Ben Ewing (Atlanta, Ga.) in the loss, who both netted three for the Blue Hose. Brian Foley (Charlotte, N.C.) and Billy Rinaldi (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) added a pair and Jeremy Metcalfe (Dallas, Ga.) tallied one.

Foley and Mulford also each had a game-high tying two assists in the contest.

The Blue Hose acquired 18 ground balls in the game with four Blue Hose tallying three in goalkeeper Pat Slaughter (Lutherville, Md.), Drew Tobias (Greensboro, N.C.), Ewing and Carl Spilly.

Tobias, Spilly, Ewing and Foley also each caused a Crusader turnover.

The Abbey, which outshot Presbyterian 45-33, was led by Evan Young’s four goals. John Fuggitt added three, while Robinson added two. Jim Ring, Ryan Matthes and Mike Flanigan all added single goals.

Defensively, the Abbey recorded 26 ground balls and caused 12 turnovers. Tom Ottman led the way with six ground balls and was among four players with a game-high two caused turnovers.

Mark Kelske and Brett Berdine combined to make seven saves in the cage as Berdine finished with six. Slaughter finished with 15 saves for PC.

The Abbey held a 15-11 advantage in face-offs as Flanigan won 11 of 16 and Mike Omalley won three of six. PC’s Ben Ewing was 9 of 16 on his face-offs.

Presbyterian next returns home for the beginning of a three-game homestand that kicks off with a 2 p.m. contest on Saturday, March 31 against St. Andrews Presbyterian at Old Bailey Stadium.
