Presbyterian Falls
21-6 To Wingate In First Conference Game Of
Of
The Season
WINGATE, N.C.- Presbyterian College’s men's lacrosse
team fell to Wingate University 21-6 on Saturday afternoon
at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field. The contest
was the first conference game for both teams.
Presbyterian falls to 0-3
overall and 0-1 in the Deep South Conference. Wingate is 2-0
overall and 1-0 in the DSC. The Blue Hose host Deep South
Conference foe Mars Hill College Tuesday (6 p.m.) in
Clinton, S.C.
Presbyterian freshman
midfielder Ben Ewing (Atlanta, Ga.) opened the scoring 30
seconds into the contest, giving the Blue Hose a brief 1-0
lead at the 14:30 mark. The Bulldogs responded in a big way,
finding the back of the nets 20 consecutive times to take
the big DSC win.
Presbyterian freshmen
attack men Jeremy Metcalfe (Dallas, Ga.) and Brian Foley
(Charlotte, N.C.) recorded two goals and two assists each.
The Blue Hose scored four goals in the fourth quarter.
Presbyterian freshman
netminder Pat Slaughter (Lutherville, Md.) went the
distance. He allowed 21 goals and notched eight saves.
Wingate junior goalkeeper David Suthers (Manassas, Va.)
played 43 minutes, allowing only two goals. Suthers recorded
seven saves.
Wingate sophomore
midfielder Ryan Otterblad (Dumfries, Va.) scored all five of
his goals in the first half. Bulldog junior attack Kyle
Costello (Wilmington, N.C.) matched Otterblad with five
goals. Costello dished out a team-high four assists, while
Otterblad recorded three helpers.
Nine different Bulldogs
scored at least one goal Saturday. Wingate junior attack
Stephen Torkington (Coronado, Calif.) recorded three goals,
while senior midfielder Bryan Safarik (Vancouver, B.C.) and
sophomore attack Greg Williams (Woodbridge, Va.) contributed
two goals each.
