Men’s Tennis Competes at USC Upstate Fall Tournament

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Presbyterian College men’s tennis team continued with their fall portion of their 2006-07 schedule on Friday and Saturday at the USC Upstate Fall Tournament.  The tournament featured Division I Gardner-Webb University, Wofford College and Furman University as well as USC Upstate, USC Aiken, Tusculum College, and Mars Hill College.

‘A’ Singles
Sophomore Aaron Chapman (Mount Pleasant, Australia) advanced to the final of the ‘A’ consolation bracket with victories over Mars Hill College’s John Allen (7-6, 7-5) and Gardner-Webb University’s Taylor Ferrier (6-1, 6-2).  Chapman fell in the championship round to Wofford College’s George Kernodle in straight sets (6-1, 7-6).  Newcomer Matthew Martin (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) handed Wofford’s Christopher Williams a 6-7, 6-3, 10-3 setback before falling to Kernodle 6-4, 6-2. 

‘B’ Singles
Sophomore Patrick Fediuk (Kimberley, British Columbia, Canada) made it to the final of the ‘B’ consolation bracket as Fediuk defeated Mars Hill’s Marco Castaneda 6-0, 6-1 and Gardner-Webb’s Kim Ellis 3-6, 6-4, 10-6.  Wofford’s McElveen handed Fediuk a 6-3, 6-3 setback in the championship match.  Freshman Michael Nicol (Spartanburg, S.C.) opened up tournament action with a 7-5, 6-2 victory against Wofford’s Jeff Muthig before falling to USC Upstate’s Arnaldo Lovera 6-1, 6-0. 

‘C’ Singles
The ‘C” consolation championship was captured by sophomore Adam Herendeen (Douglasville, Ga.) as Herendeen defeated freshman Mark Cannatelli (Melbourne, Australia) 7-5, 6-2.  Herendeen picked up a 7-5, 6-3 win against another Blue Hose player in freshman Scotty Greenbaum (Keswick, Va.) and a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Mars Hill’s Robert Roddy en route to the final match.  Cannatelli had recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win against Mars Hill’s Andrew Waldrop and a 6-2, 7-5 victory versus Mars Hill’s Drew Belton before facing Herendeen.

Doubles
In the doubles ‘A’ draw, the Blue Hose duo of Chapman and Martin defeated Wofford’s tandem of Muthig and Scott Collins 8-3 before succumbing to USC Aiken’s Dagoberto Darezzo and Edward Horne 8-4.

Nicol and sophomore Brad Luciuk (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada) advanced to the championship match for the doubles ‘B’ draw after collecting an 8-4 win over Wofford’s Hunter Strasburger and Forrest Bridges and an 8-6 victory over USC Aiken’s Pierre Negri and Wyatt Boylston.  Nicol and Luciuk lost the doubles title to Tusculum College’s Leo Guaycurus and Henrique Rodrigues 8-4.

The Blue Hose will wrap up the fall portion of their 2006-07 campaign, Thursday-Sunday, Sept. 28-Oct. 1 at the 2006 ITA Southeast Regionals hosted by Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Fla.
