Men’s Tennis Has Successful Outing at Gardner-Webb Fall Invite

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Presbyterian College men’s tennis team kicked off the fall portion of their 2006-07 schedule on Friday at the Gardner-Webb University Fall Invite.  The two-day tournament will wrap up action tomorrow with the Blue Hose having one singles player in the championship round.

‘A’ Singles
Sophomore Aaron Chapman (Mount Pleasant, Australia) is in the championship round of the ‘A’ singles flight after defeating Gardner-Webb’s Taylor Ferrier in straight sets (6-4, 6-2).  Chapman will face the winner of Viega and UNC-Asheville’s Mauricio Correa in the final.  Chapman reached the semifinals with his defeat of GWU’s Roberto Vasques (6-2, 6-7, 11-9).

Newcomer Matthew Martin (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) fell to Ferrier, 6-2, 6-4, in his first match as a Blue Hose.  Sophomore Patrick Fediuk (Kimberley, British Columbia, Canada) lost 3-6, 6-4, 5-10 to GWU’s Gabe Viega.

B’ Singles
Freshman Michael Nicol (Spartanburg, S.C.) opened up tournament action with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against GWU’s Eric Proctor before handing fellow teammate Andrew Lee (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) a 6-0, 7-5 setback to reach the semifinals against GWU’s Grant Van Rensburg.  Van Rensburg defeated PC’s freshman Scotty Greenbaum (Keswick, Va.), 6-0, 6-2 to reach the semis against Nicol.

Also in the semifinals for the Blue Hose is sophomore Adam Herendeen (Douglasville, Ga.).  Herendeen defeated fellow teammate Mark Cannatelli in three sets and will face UNCA’s Joe May in the semis tomorrow.  May handed PC’s junior Zach Glankler (Highland Village, Texas) a 6-1, 6-2 setback.  Cannatelli had beat UNCA’s Casey Saulpaugh, 6-1, 7-6 before going on to face Herendeen.

Sophomore Brad Luciuk (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada) fell to GWU’s Ryan Bernthal in three sets (7-6, 5-7, 9-11). 

Doubles
The Blue Hose duo of Chapman and Martin advanced to the semifinals by defeating UNCA’s tandem of Nicholas Thuell and Saulpaugh, 8-1.

Cannatelli and Herendeen will take on GWU’s Vasques and Bernthal tomorrow following a first round bye.  Vasques and Bernthal defeated Fediuk and Luciuk, 8-4, for the right to face Cannatelli and Herendeen.

Glankler and Lee dropped an 8-2 decision to GWU’s Kim Ellis and Viega.
