PC SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH UNC PEMBROKE

CLINTON, S.C. –The Blue Hose softball team fell in a heart breaker 7-6 in the first of two games to the Braves of UNC Pembroke, but in the second PC put five runs on the board to win 5-2 in a game shortened by nightfall. 

First Game – UNC Pembroke 7, PC 6

The Blue Hose (2-5-1) offense got off to a slow start and was down 5-1, but in the fifth inning PC put together a five run rally.  Junior outfielder Nickie Templeton (Clinton, SC) got the rally started by knocking a single into right field and the following Blue Hose batters followed suit as the team sent all nine batters to the plate and knocked four hits.  Senior first baseman Beth Rocker (Alpharetta, GA) got two RBI’s on her only hit of the day and helped give the Blue Hose a 6-5 lead going into the sixth inning.

The Braves tied the game in the sixth and in the top of the seventh with one out UNC Pembroke (3-1) freshman outfielder Cyndi Carnaghi (White Plains, NY) sent a ball over the left field fence to put the Braves up for good at 7-6.  PC’s junior pitcher Brook Norris (Anderson, SC) took the loss and fell to 1-4 on the season with freshman pitcher Heather Riley (McKeesport, PA) getting her second win of the season.

Second Game – PC 5, UNC Pembroke 2

Freshman outfielder Katie Fite (Conway, SC) knocked in three Blue Hose in the third inning to help give PC their second win of the season.  The third inning started with three straight PC singles and in the next at bat Fite cleared the bases with a long double to left center field.  The Blue Hose went on to tack on two more runs in the inning.  Norris took the 5-1 cushion and swept through the Braves offense allowing only one earned run and scattering six hits to get her second win on the season and improve to 2-4 overall.  UNC Pembroke junior pitcher Nicole Fields (Jacksonville, NC) took the loss pitching three and a third innings, allowing four runs on seven hits.

UNC Pembroke returns to action Sunday at home against Coker College in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm.  PC will also be in action on February 23 on the road at Anderson College in a doubleheader that begins at 1:00 pm.
