WITH CATAWBA IN LEAGUE OPENING DOUBLEHEADER SOFTBALL ACTION
SALISBURY, NC --
Catawba College and visiting Presbyterian split a doubleheader
in South Atlantic Conference softball action on Saturday
afternoon at Whitley Field. Presbyterian won game one 2-1 in
eight innings, while the Lady Indians claimed game two 5-3.
The Blue Hose now stand at 32-7 overall and 1-1 in the SAC,
while Catawba is 20-19 and 1-1.
Presbyterian took the opener in extra innings as Rachel
Bailey (Howard, OH) doubled home pinch-runner Jessica
Kilpatrick (Hendersonville, NC) with one out in the eighth
for the eventual game-winning run. The Blue Hose had grabbed a
1-0 lead in the third. Haley Brooks (Tifton, GA) led
off the inning with a double and scored when Bailey’s bunt
single was thrown away at first.
Catawba fought back to tie the game in the sixth. Jessica
Rivera (Key West, FL) and Liz Corbett (Severn, MD)
led off the frame with singles and Rivera scored on an error.
Rivera had three hits for Catawba, while Vivian Lee
(Salisbury, NC) had two hits. Bailey had three hits for
Presbyterian and the game’s lone RBI.

The Lady Indians would get the split be taking game two.
Training 1-0 in the second, Catawba would plate three runs to
take the lead for good. Rivera led off the inning with a
double and scored on a single by Corbett. With two outs, the
Lady Indians got bases-loaded infield singles by Stacey
Handy (Advance, NC) and Jenn Mehl (West Creek, NJ)
for the final two runs.
Presbyterian had taken a 1-0 lead in the second after Jessica
Peterka (Sarasota, FL) singled home Jamie Vining
(Fayetteville, GA), who had doubled. The two would also team
up for a run in the fourth as Vining doubled and Peterka
singled her home, both times with two outs.
Catawba would push across two runs in the fifth to regain
control. Rivera plated a run on a fielder’s choice, while
Corbett singled home the second. Presbyterian cut the deficit
to 5-3 in the sixth as pinch-hitter Trish Schwartz
(Arden, NC) knocked in a run on a ground out.
Peterka had three hits in the second game for Presbyterian to
complete a 4-for-6 day. Rivera was 4-for-7 for Catawba in the
doubleheader.
