Sunday, February 22, 2004 BLUE HOSE SOFTBALL ROLLS PAST LADY COUGARS 8-0 & 10-1 CLINTON,
S.C. — Presbyterian College received solid pitching
performances from senior Brooke
Norris (Anderson, S.C.) and sophomore Olivia
Hazel (Chesapeake, Va.) to lead the Lady Blue Hose to
a pair of wins (8-0 & 10-1) over the visiting Lady Cougars
of Mountain State University Sunday afternoon at the PC
Softball Complex. The Lady Blue Hose extend their win streak
to seven straight victories and improve to 7-1 on the season.
Mountain State drops to 0-6 on the season. GAME #1 — PRESBYTERIAN 8, MOUNTAIN STATE 0 In the first game, Norris
threw five solid innings allowing one hit and striking out six
batters en route to the 8-0 shutout victory. PC took an early
1-0 lead in the second on a RBI-single from freshman second
baseman Rachel
Bailey (Howard, OH). The lead increased to 2-0 in the
third when freshman first baseman Jessica
Peterka (Sarasota, Fla.) connected on a RBI-double. The Blue Hose broke open
the game in the fifth, scoring six runs on five hits including
a RBI-triple from junior outfielder Whitney
Hannon (Greer, S.C.) and a pair of RBI-singles from
Bailey and junior catcher Tina
Deveaux (Mauldin, S.C.). PC was led at the plate by
Bailey who went three-for-five with on double and two RBI
while Hannon went two-for-three with two runs scored and an
RBI. Seniors shortstop Jamie
Vining (Fayetteville, Ga.) and center fielder Amanda
Teal (Chapin, S.C.) each collected a pair of hits in
three at-bats. Mountain State starting pitcher freshman Katherine
Rains (Hamilton, OH) took the loss after allowing seven
earned runs on 11 hits while striking out three batters. GAME
#2 — PRESBYTERIAN 10, MOUNTAIN STATE 1 In
the second game, PC’s Hazel threw four innings allowing one
unearned run on three hits while the Blue Hose bats pounded
out six hits and drew four walks en route to a 10-1 victory. The Lady Blue Hose opened
the game with a five-run first inning highlighted by an
RBI-single from senior outfielder Nickie
Templeton (Clinton, S.C.) and an RBI on a fielder’s
choice from Peterka. Mountain State cut the lead to 5-1 in
third on a fielder’s choice by freshman first baseman Breanne
Harper (Bridgewater, Va.). In the bottom of the inning, PC
pushed three runs across the plate to extend the lead to 8-1.
Sophomore outfielder Katie
Fite’s (Conway, S.C.) RBI-single and a Lady Cougar
error keyed the scoring. PC added two insurance runs in the
fourth to pull ahead 10-1. PC’s sophomore pitcher Samantha
Slater (Westerville, OH) closed out the fifth inning,
collecting a pair of strikeouts. At the plate, six different
hitters for PC picked up a hit in the second game. The Lady Blue Hose return
to action on Tuesday, February 24 when they host Erskine
College at 2:30 pm while Mountain State faces Trevecca
Nazarene University on the road Friday, February 27. Presbyterian hosts Erskine College for a doubleheader Tuesday, February 24th at 2:30 pm while Mountain State University travels to play a doubleheader against Trevecca Nazarene on Friday, February 27 at 2 pm. |
