PRESBYTERIAN SOFTBALL WINS FOUR GAMES AT THE USC SPARTANBURG SPRING TOURNAMENT SPARTANBURG, S.C. --Presbyterian College Lady Blue Hose won four of five games this past weekend at the USC Spartanburg Spring Tourney. Presbyterian improves to 29-6 overall on the season. GAME #1 — PRESBYTERIAN 6, QUEENS UNIVERSITY 2 On Friday, the Lady Blue Hose scored six runs and held Queens University of Charlotte to only two runs. Leading Presbyterian at the plate were freshman Rachel Bailey (Howard, OH) 2-4 with two RBI's and Jessica Peterka (Sarasota, FL) who went 3-4 with two RBI's. PC's senior pitcher Brooke Norris (Anderson, SC) picked up the win while the Royals pitcher Jennifer Churchill (Lake Forest, CA) picked up the loss. GAME #2 — PRESBYTERIAN 4, VALDOSTA STATE 2 Presbyterian's senior centerfielder Amanda Teal (Chapin, SC) hit a two run homerun in the bottom of the first to give the Blue Hose a 2-0 lead. PC would add one run in the third but Valdosta State scored in the fourth with Linsey Walker (Waycross, AL) hitting a solo homerun. The Blazers' Holly Willis (Elkhorn, NE) would also hit a solo homerun in the sixth to cut PC's lead to 3-2. However, the Lady Blue Hose would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with Rachel Bailey scoring on a triple by Teal. PC would hold the Blazers scoreless in the seventh to win 4-2. PC's freshman Megan Wheelus (Florence, SC) picked up the victory while Ashley Ward (Ringgold, AL) received the loss for the Blazers. GAME #3 — PRESBYTERIAN 3, LONGWOOD 2 On Saturday, Longwood University saw its five-game win streak snap after dropping a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to Presbyterian College Saturday at the Spartanburg Softball Tournament. The Blue Hose jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after Jessica Peterka hit a two-run homer in the first inning. Longwood responded with a run of its own in the top of the second, followed by another Presbyterian run in the bottom of the third. The Lancers made a late seventh inning effort to take the lead, but their lone run in the frame would not be enough to capture the win. PC's Samantha Slater (Westerville, OH) picked up the win while Jen Steele (Manassas Park, VA) took the loss on the mound for Longwood. GAME #4 — PRESBYTERIAN 4, USC-SPARTANBURG 0 Presbyterian
jumped on top with two runs in the first inning and the
combination of Jessica
Flanagan (Piedmont, SC) and Megan Wheelus
proved to be the difference on the mound for the Blue Hose.
Flanagan tossed four innings, scattering four hits while
striking out two. Wheelus tossed three innings of relief to
pick up the save. She struck out five and thwarted a Lady
Rifle rally in the fifth inning. USCS had loaded the bases
with no outs, but Wheelus recorded three straight outs as the
Lady Rifles came away empty. Presbyterian added two runs in
the third inning and held the Lady Rifles scoreless to win
4-0. GAME #5 — # 8 BELMONT ABBEY 2, # 1 PRESBYTERIAN 1 On Sunday, #1 Presbyterian College played #8 Belmont Abbey College in the first round of the single elimination tourney. The Lady Blue Hose fell to the Lady Crusaders 2-1 as Belmont's Keri Blackwelder (Stanfield, NC) pitched seven complete innings allowing only one run on four hits. PC's freshman Jessica Peterka hit her second homerun of the tournament in the bottom of the fourth for the Lady Blue Hose only run. Presbyterian returns to action this Wednesday, March 24th to face UNC-Pembroke in Pembroke, N.C. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start. |
