BLUE HOSE SOFTBALL SWEEPS LANDER ON THE ROAD

GREENWOOD, SC - Jessica Peterka went 5-for-7 and Samantha Slater was the winning pitcher twice, leading Presbyterian College to a non-conference softball doubleheader sweep over Lander 4-1 and 5-4 Thursday at Bearcat Field. The Lady Bearcats fell to 16-12 while the Lady Blue Hose improved to 10-6.

The Lady Blue Hose scored four unearned runs in the third inning of the opener, making Kari Tuten (0-2) a tough-luck loser for Lander. Tuten pitched seven innings, allowing no earned runs on six hits, two walks and one strikeout.

Peterka and Tina Deveaux each went 2-for-3 for PC while Slater pitched a six-hitter.

Lander's only run came in the top of the first when Keri Davis singled, Lib Harris singled, and Colleen Leggieri lifted a sacrifice fly. Davis and Harris each went 2-for-3 for the Lady Bearcats.

Lander wasted a dramatic three-run homer by Melissa Ryals in the nightcap.

The Lady Bearcats trailed 4-0 going into the bottom of the sixth when Jean Smith relieved Jessica Flanagan. Harris and Leggieri hit back-to-back singles, and Ryals followed with a line drive homer over the fence in left center to cut the deficit to 4-3. Tracy Cumalander walked, moved to second on Jenna Kellett's sacrifice bunt, and scored on Sheena Mason's single to tie it at 4.

But PC, who scored three runs on a passed ball, wild pitch, and error earlier in the game, took advantage of another error to score the game-winner in the top of the seventh. With one out, Rachel Bailey  reached on a three-base error, then Peterka singled her home.

The Lady Bearcats failed to rally in the bottom of the seventh, getting only a walk. Kellett (6-2) took the loss in relief of Mason. Slater (3-2) got the victory in relief.

In the second game, Peterka led PC by going 3-for-4 with two run-scoring singles. Lindsey Sammons paced Lander with two hits in three at-bats while Leggieri was 2-for-4.
