BLUE HOSE SWEEPS LANDER IN HOME OPENER

CLINTON, S.C. – The #21-ranked Presbyterian College softball team swept a doubleheader from Lander University Thursday afternoon, rallying to win the first game 9-8, before taking an 11-0 victory in the nightcap.

In the first game, Lander (1-3) overcame a 3-0 defecit in the top of the sixth inning with eight runs, highlighted by a grand slam by Melissa Ryals (Myrtle Beach, SC).

PC (4-0) retook the lead in the bottom of the inning with six runs on five hits.

Jean Smith (Tampa, FL) took the victory on the mound for the Blue Hose, allowing three runs in two innings in relief of Sam Slater (Westerville, OH) and Olivia Hazel (Chesapeake City, MD). Sheena Mason (Colbert, GA) took the loss for the Bearcats.

Rachel Bailey (Howard, OH) led PC at the plate with three hits and three RBI’s.  Whitney Hannon (Greer, SC) and Haley Brooks (Tifton, GA) both finished with two hits. Lib Harris (Calhoun Falls, SC) led Lander with two hits.

In the nightcap, the Blue Hose scored four runs in each of the first two innings, highlighted by Katie Fite’s (Conway, SC) homerun in the second, and added three in the third inning to take the easy victory.

In the first, Bailey, Shannon Vining (Fayetteville, GA), Hannon, and Jessica Peterka (Sarasota, FL) all reached base and scored on either a passed ball or wild pitch to give the Blue Hose the only runs it would need.

Bailey led PC with three hits, two RBI’s and three runs scored, while Vining finished with two hits to lead the Blue Hose.

Jessica Flanagan (Piedmont, SC) picked up the victory for PC, allowing only four hits and striking out two.

PC will be back in action Tuesday afternoon as they travel to Florence, SC to take on Francis Marion University in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
