BLUE HOSE
SOFTBALL SWEEPS LIMESTONE
GAFFNEY,
SC – The #21-ranked
Presbyterian College softball team swept a season opening
doubleheader from Limestone College Tuesday afternoon, winning
the first game 5-2, before taking the nightcap 4-3.
In the first game, Samantha Slater
(Westerville, OH) (1-0) held Limestone to just 2 hits in five
innings of work. Presbyterian got on the board in the
first when lead off hitter Rachel
Bailey (Howard, OH) got hit by a pitch and later
scored on Jessica Peterka
(Sarasota, FL) sacrifice fly. The Blue Hose put up a
three spot in the third on RBI singles from Jean
Smith (Tampa, FL) and Whitney
Hannon (Greer, SC) and a sac fly from Lauren
Hixson (Spartanburg, SC).
Limestone answered in the bottom of the fourth when Amy Yates
ripped a two out double to left and scored after a Courtney
Sylva infield single. Unfortunately Presbyterian
would tack on a run in the fourth and Limestone would not
threaten again until the seventh. In the seventh Lauren
Miceli hit a lead off homer to left to make the score 5-2,
but the Saints were unable to score again.
Keisha Powell (0-1) took the loss for Limestone,
allowing 4 earned runs on eight hits in seven innings. Courtney
Silva went 2-for-3 in the loss.
In game two Presbyterian continued to pour it on as they built
a 4-0 lead. The Blue Hose got a run in the first on an
RBI single from Hannon and added 2 runs on 3 hits and 2 errors
in the third. In the fifth, the Blue Hose tacked on a
run on three hits, but they left the bases loaded.
Through the first 6 innings the Saints had left 8 runners on
base, but freshman first baseman Heather Wood came
through in the 7th.
In the seventh, Yates reached on an error, Silva singled,
Brittany Owens walked, and Keisha Powell reached on a
fielder’s choice to set the table for Wood who ripped a
bases clearing triple to left. Unfortunately Jean Smith
would get her 6th strikeout to end the rally and the game.
Smith (1-0) took the win, allowing no earned runs on nine hits
in seven innings of work.
PC will be
back in action Thursday afternoon in their home opener with a
doubleheader against Lander University beginning at 2 p.m.
