Presbyterian Sweeps Mars Hill in SAC Softball Action

Mars Hill, NC – The Presbyterian College Blue hose swept a softball doubleheader from Mars Hill this afternoon at Ponder Park. PC took the first game 3-0 and then defeated the Lions 8-1 in game two. PC improves to 27-19 overall and 5-5 in the conference.  Mars Hill’s record falls to 20-29 overall and 2-8 in the conference.

Game One: PC 3, MHC 0

Presbyterian plated two runs in the top of the third as Whitney Hannon (Greer, SC) hit a homerun with Lindsay Wismer (Sarasota, FL) aboard.  The Blue hose added an insurance run in the fifth as Hannon plated Kellyn Henderson (Simpsonville, SC) who got on base by hitting a double. Samantha Slater (Westerville, OH) went the distance to get her seventh win against five losses.  She struck out eight and only walked three in the shutout. Kristi Marszalec (West Bloomfield, MI) took the loss for Mars Hill throwing a complete game.  Marszalec is now 10-13 on the year.  PC held the Lions to only three hits in the game.

Game Two; PC 8, MHC 1

Presbyterian took control early in the second game. They scored three runs in the first inning, two runs in the second inning, and one in the third inning before Mars Hill broke the ice with a run in the bottom of the third frame to make the score 6-1. Katie Fite (Conway, SC) was the offensive leader for Presbyterian.  he was 4-for-4 with four RBI.  Henderson and Tina Deveaux (Simpsonville, SC) had two hits apiece for the Blue Hose.  Mars Hill loaded the bases in the first and third innings, but could only plate one run.  Jean Smith (Tampa, FL) got the win, it was her ninth of the year.  She is now 9-3 overall in the circle.  Megan Wheelus (Florence, SC) came in to pitch the last four innings and struck out four Lion batters.  Lyn Loomis (Ocean Isle, NC) took the loss (8-14) for the Lions.  Kristina Osborn (Birmingham, AL), Tiffany Self (Del Rio, TN) and Jessica Valentine (Frederick, MD) each had two hits for Mars Hill.

The Lions will return to action on Monday, when they host Lander University at Ponder Park.  First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm. PC is on the road at SAC rival Newberry College on Wednesday with the doubleheader scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
