LADY BLUE HOSE SOFTBALL SWEEPS MOUNTAIN STATE 10-0, 5-1

CLINTON, S.C. — Presbyterian College swept a doubleheader from the visiting Lady Cougars of Mountain State University 10-0, 5-1 behind a solid pitching performance junior Jean Smith (Tampa, FL) who picked up both wins today in non-conference softball action Friday afternoon at the PC Softball Complex.

In the first game, Smith pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only two singles while striking out six batters. PC’s sophomore first baseman Jessica Peterka (Sarasota, FL) sparked the Lady Blue Hose that pounded out eight hits with a two-for-two performance at the plate to go along with two RBI and one double. Seven different PC players registered a hit in the game.

PC led 3-0 entering the third inning when they tallied seven runs to pull ahead 10-0. That would be enough runs as Smith did not allow a hit in the final two at-bats for the Lady Cougars. Mountain State’s sophomore pitcher Katherine Rains (Cincinnati, OH) picked up the loss after going four innings allowing 10 runs, six earned on eight hits.

In the second game, Smith picked up the win in relief after going five innings allowing one hit and striking out two batters. PC’s junior pitcher Olivia Hazel (Chesapeake City, MD) started the game and allowed one earned run on two hits before being replaced by Smith.

The Lady Blue Hose offense was led by freshman centerfielder Kellyn Henderson (Simpsonville, S.C.) who went three-for-four at the plate, scoring two runs and sophomore second baseman Rachel Bailey (Howard, OH) who was a perfect three-for-three at the plate while adding three RBI and two runs scored. Bailey also tallied one double and one triple among her three hits.

MSU’s freshman pitcher Stephanie Barrow (Grove City, OH) picked up the loss after going six innings allowing five earned runs on 10 hits while striking out three batters. At the plate, the Lady Cougars were led by Barrow who tallied one of the team’s three hits and scored one run.

The Lady Blue Hose improve to 12-6 on the season while the Lady Cougars fall to 1-8 on the season.
