WINGATE SWEEPS SAC SOFTBALL DH OVER 
VISITING PRESBYTERIAN

WINGATE, NC The Wingate University softball team swept a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader over Presbyterian College Wednesday afternoon at the Wingate University softball facility. Wingate won the first game 4-1 and the second game 10-2 in six innings.

With the two league victories, Wingate improves to 23-7 overall and 3-1 in the SAC. Presbyterian falls to 23-17 overall and 1-3 in the SAC. Both teams have home games Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs host Carson-Newman College, while the Blue Hose entertain Lenoir-Rhyne College.

Wingate junior pitcher Ashley Green (Charleston, S.C.) pitched a three-hitter in the opener. Bulldog junior pitcher Lauren Powell (Midlothian, Va.) and sophomore hurler Brittney Taylor (Lexington, N.C.) combined for a five-hitter in the nightcap.

Bulldog senior shortstop Cameron Langston (Goldsboro, N.C.) was five-for-seven with two RBI in the two games combined. Wingate sophomore second baseman Megan McPhail (Fayetteville, N.C.) had a double, a triple and three RBI in game two.

Game #1 – Wingate 4, Presbyterian 1
 
Green’s strong pitching and timely hits helped Wingate to the first game win. Green allowed one earned run on three hits. She struck out four and walked only one, improving her record to 11-3 on the season.

The Bulldogs plated four runs before the Blue Hose could get on the board. Wingate recorded single runs in the first and third innings and added two insurance runs in the fifth frame.
 
In the bottom of the first inning, senior third baseman Carey Bumgardner (Mechanicsville, Va.) walked with one out. One out later, Bumgardner moved to third base on a single by freshman designated player Courtney Wagner (Myrtle Beach, S.C.). Bumgardner scored on an RBI single by Langston.

In the Wingate third, junior center fielder Grace Cunningham (Camden, S.C.) started the frame with an infield single. Bumgardner sacrificed her to second base. Cunningham scored on an RBI double by junior first baseman Sarah Carleton (Powhatan, Va.).

The Bulldogs scored two unearned runs in the fifth inning. Langston plated both runs with a two-RBI single. Presbyterian scored its only run of the contest in the top of the sixth inning. Blue Hose freshman outfielder Kellyn Henderson (Simponsville, S.C.) doubled with one out. Senior pinch-hitter Whitney Hannon (Greer, S.C.) followed with an RBI double to score Henderson.
 
Langston was the only player for either team to have more than one hit in game one. She was two-for-three with two singles and two RBI. Two of Presbyterian’s three hits came in the sixth inning.

Blue Hose junior pitcher Jean Smith (Tampa, Fla.) took the loss. In four innings of work, she allowed two runs (both earned) on five hits. Smith struck out one and walked one.
 
Game #2 – Wingate 10, Presbyterian 2 (six innings)
 
The Bulldogs scored three runs each in the second and the fourth innings to take a commanding 6-1 lead en route to the second game victory. In second inning, the big hit for the Bulldogs was a two-RBI single by senior right fielder Amy Parmalee (Norwalk, Conn.). Earlier in the second inning, McPhail plated a run with a bunt double.

Presbyterian answered with a single spot in the top of the third inning, thanks to a lead-off triple by sophomore shortstop Rachel Bailey (Howard, Ohio). Bailey scored on an RBI single by Henderson.

Wingate scored three runs on five hits in the fourth inning. Bumgardner, Carleton and freshman left fielder Lindsay Moore (Jupiter, Fla.) had RBI singles in the fourth inning for the hosts.
 
McPhail plated Wingate’s final two runs in the sixth inning with her third triple of the season. McPhail was two-for-four with a double, a triple and three RBI in the nightcap. Langston was three-for-four with two runs scored.

Henderson was two-for-three with two RBI for Presbyterian in game two. Henderson plated runs in the third and fifth innings with RBI singles.

Powell picked up the win for the Bulldogs, pitching five complete innings. She gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits. Powell struck out five and walked only one. Taylor pitched the sixth and escaped a bases-loaded jam with one out.

Presbyterian used four pitchers in game two. Blue Hose sophomore Jessica Flanagan (Piedmont, S.C.) took the loss. She pitched one-plus innings, allowing three runs on four hits. The Bulldogs compiled 13 hits in game two.
