PC Softball Opens
Year With Doubleheader Sweep Of Brevard
CLINTON, S.C. – Presbyterian College’s
softball team opened its 2007 season with a doubleheader
sweep of the visiting Brevard Tornados on Thursday afternoon
at the PC Softball Complex. The Lady Blue Hose won the first
game 7-4 and tallied an 11-8 victory in the second game.
The two wins picked up by the Lady Blue
Hose earned PC softball coach Dave Majeski his first two
victories all-time and improved PC to 2-0 on the young
season.
Game One
Cari Clark (Monticello, Fla.) led the
Blue Hose in the first game, acquiring two hits and 3 RBIs
in the 7-4 victory.
Presbyterian opened the game by
surrendering the first two runs of the contest to the
Tornados. Clark and the Lady Blue Hose were then able to
place three runs on the board in the bottom of the second to
take the lead for good.
Clark earned the first RBI of the game
for PC, sacrificing Ashley Ford (Marietta, Ga.) home on a
bunt. Ford had reached base in the inning by doubling to
left centerfield.
Clark, who was 2-for-2 in the game,
then concluded the scoring for the Lady Blue Hose in the
contest by crossing the dish for PC’s final run on a passed
ball.
Mary Gordon (1-0) was the winning
pitcher for the Lady Blue Hose in game one. The freshman
from Vernon, Conn. garnered her first ever win by pitching
six strong innings of three-hit softball. Gordon struck out
seven Tornados. Brevard’s Rachel Montgomery (0-1) was given
the loss after giving up four runs in two innings pitched.
Megan Wheelus (Florence, S.C.), who led
the nation in saves two years ago, began the 2007 season
strongly by earning a save in her first appearance.
Game Two
A freshman from Orlando, Fla., Paige
Cassady picked up right where Gordon left off in the first
game by earning her first intercollegiate victory in her
first start.
Cassady (1-0) was equally adept at
fanning Brevard batters as Gordon, striking out nine.
The second game overall was somewhat of
an anomaly as the Lady Blue Hose only allowed five hits to
the Tornados in the 11-8 victory.
In fact, the Lady Blue Hose entered the
fourth inning with a 7-2 lead, but allowed Brevard to pick
up five runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Presbyterian was able to reclaim the
lead over the next couple innings by outscoring Brevard 3-1
in the final two innings of the game that was called off
prior to the seventh inning due to darkness at the PC
Softball Complex.
Offensively, Presbyterian was led in
the second game by Tate, who hit PC’s first home run of the
year. Tate was 2-for-4 overall in the game with two RBIs.
The Lady Blue Hose next face off
against Lander in a twinbill that begins at 2 p.m. on
Monday, Feb. 12.
