PC Falls Twice In Twinbill With Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. –
The Lady Blue Hose fell to Charleston Southern in both games of the doubleheader with scores of 6-5 and 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.

After Presbyterian's Jenny Box and Rachel Bailey scored two runs in the top of the eighth to lead 5-3, Jill Shondel knotted the game with a two-run triple. Junior catcher Ashley Conway batted next and ended game one with a hard-hit shot down the third base line to score Shondel.

The Blue Hose produced a run in the second, fifth, and sixth frames, but the Lady Bucs evened the score with three runs in the sixth. Conway doubled with two aboard to put the first run on the scoreboard and PC's reliever Paige Cassady came in to pitch for starter Mary Gordon. Candace Rowell and Jennifer Pardue each notched RBI singles.

Caitlin Allen (2-5) went the distance for Charleston Southern and had a no-hitter going through 4 2/3 innings, finishing with six hits and two earned runs. Cassady (8-4) was charged with the loss for PC, throwing only the eighth inning, allowing a hit to all three batters faced and failing to record an out, having entered the game with PC ahead by two.

Cassady was tabbed to start game two, limiting CSU to one hit but allowed three runs, two due directly to bases on balls. Offensively, PC started quickly. The first three Blue Hose each hit safely: Kellyn Henderson for a single, Rachel Bailey a double, and Laura Tate a two-run triple. Ashley Ford singled to drive in Tate for a 3-0 lead out of the gate.

With Amy Trenkamp and two outs in Charleston Southern's first, a routine throw to first was mishandled and Trenkamp came home for CSU's first score. In the fourth with two outs and bases loaded, Cassady walked the next two batters, and with them, the tying runs. Candace Rowell put Charleston Southern on top in the sixth with a two-out RBI single.

After giving up four hits in the first inning, CSU senior pitcher Amanda Noble scattered six over the next six innings while striking out four to gain her fourth win. PC's Megan Wheelus pitched only the sixth inning, giving up the winning run, and was tagged with the loss, her first decision on the year.

The Lady Blue Hose next welcomes USC Aiken at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20. Charleston Southern's next action will be at Jacksonville on March 22.
