PC Softball Loses First Of
Year In Twinbill Split With Lander
GREENWOOD, S.C. – Presbyterian College and Lander
University split a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Doug
Spears Field. PC won game one 4-1 before suffering its first
loss of the campaign in a 10-0 loss to the Bearcats in game
two.
Presbyterian ends the twinbill 9-1 on the season and will
next play at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6 against Limestone
College in Gaffney, S.C. The team will return home the next
day for a doubleheader against Trevecca Nazarene at 2 p.m.
on Wednesday, March 7 at the PC Softball Complex.
Game One
Shortstop Rachel Bailey led the Lady Blue Hose in the first
game, going 3-for-4 on the day from the plate. Bailey, who
also stole one base, had two RBIs in the win.
Bailey was one of two PC softball players with two runs
batted in as catcher Laura Tate had two RBIs in the contest.
The game was tied 0-0 until the top of the sixth inning when
the Lady Blue Hose placed the first two runs of the contest
on the scoreboard. The Bearcats scored one in the bottom of
the stanza to cut the PC lead to one.
Presbyterian was able to score two more in the seventh and
final inning to earn the 4-1 win.
Lander’s Natalie Smith led the Bearcats in the game from the
plate, going 2-for-3 in the first game.
Mary Gordon improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season from the
pitchers circle with the PC victory. Gordon fanned five
Bearcats in the win.
Game Two
Lander's Austin Murray tossed a one-hit shutout to end
Presbyterian College's undefeated season, 10-0, in the
second game.
Murray struck out five and walked one in five innings of
work. The game was called in the fifth inning due to the
eight-run rule. PC's Paige Cassidy was the losing pitcher as
she walked two and allowed five runs (two earned) on two
hits in two innings pitched.
The loss was the first of the season for Cassady, who is now
4-1 on the year.
Lander scored four runs in the second inning and six more in
the sixth.
Kelly Henderson got PC's lone hit.
