PC Sweeps Montreat To Remain Unbeaten
CLINTON, S.C. – The Lady Blue Hose easily defeated
Montreat by the scores of 7-1 and 9-1 in a Saturday
afternoon twinbill at the PC Softball Complex. On a
blistering cold day PC’s bats stayed hot as Presbyterian out
hit the Cavaliers 16-5 on the day.
Blue Hose pitchers surrendered only two runs through 11
innings of action on Saturday.
With the win PC moves to 6-0 on the season and the Cavaliers
drop to 3-5.
Game 1
Montreat scored a run in the top of the first inning, but PC
would plate three of their own runs in the bottom of the
inning.
The run picked up by Montreat in the beginning of the first
stanza would eventually prove to be the Cavaliers only one
as PC never looked back after taking the lead in the bottom
of the first.
The Blue Hose first three batters would hit safely in the
first as Laura Tate, Ashley Ford, and Stephanie Payne all
recorded RBI’s in the inning.
Kellyn Henderson scored PC’s first run of the game on a
Laura Tate single after putting herself in scoring position
by stealing both second and third base.
Laura Tate scored a run in the second on a wild pitch by
Montreat starter Haven Payne.
Presbyterian tacked on the final three runs of the game in
its half of the fourth inning on a home run by Jessica
Peterka that plated three. The homer was Peterka’s third of
the season.
The top of the order for PC was particularly strong with
Henderson, Tate, and Bailey finishing the game with two hits
each.
Freshman Mary Gordon earned her third win of the season,
going four complete innings and allowing only one run. Haven
Payne surrendered the loss for Montreat, pitching all six
innings.
Game 2
In the second game PC used a seven-run fifth inning to blow
open what was a tight contest.
The Blue Hose clung to a 2-1 lead entering the bottom of the
fifth before Peterka put the game out of reach with her
second three-run dinger of the day.
Henderson scored the first run of the inning from third base
on a double steal.
PC wasn’t finished after Peterka’s home run. Ford would hit
a two-bagger to left field and come around to score on a RBI
single by Jenny Box.
In Henderson’s second trip to the plate in the bottom of the
fifth she would draw a walk to bring in Erin Stewart.
Tate drove in the final run of the game on a single to the
shortstop.
The game would be called due to the eight-run rule in the
fifth inning.
Paige Cassady had another outstanding pitching performance,
giving up only one run on one hit and striking out 10 in her
five innings of work.
The win moves her record to 3-0 on the season.
Rachel Stowe was handed the loss for Montreat after pitching
the entire second game for the Cavaliers and surrendering
all nine runs.
Presbyterian will go on the road to USC Upstate and Brevard
for midweek games before coming back home for a doubleheader
against Lincoln Memorial on Sunday, Feb. 25. First pitch is
scheduled for 1 p.m. at the PC Softball Complex.
