Volleyball Falls Twice at Armstrong Atlantic State Classic

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The two-day 2006 Armstrong Atlantic State University/Chatham Orthopaedics Pirate Classic opened up on Friday and saw the Presbyterian College volleyball team drop two matches.  The Blue Hose kicked off tournament action against host Armstrong Atlantic State and were swept by the Pirates, 30-27, 30-24, 30-20.  Presbyterian (5-5) closed out the day with a 3-1 (30-28, 27-30, 23-30, 32-34) loss to Rollins College.

Armstrong Atlantic State 3, PC 0 (Box Score)
The Pirates (5-7) took advantage of Presbyterian’s 27 attack errors as well as 16 service reception errors by the Blue Hose in order to record their fifth win of the season.  AASU’s balanced attack helped the Pirates post hitting percentages of .276 and .393 in games two and three, respectively.  PC struggled offensively, finishing the match with a hitting percentage of .056.

The trio of junior Rindy Vidovich (San Pedro, Calif.) and seniors Adriana Miller (Rocklin, Calif.) and Leah Schmiedge (Regina, Saskatchewan) led AASU’s offense.  Vidovich tallied a team-high nine kills, Miller had eight, and Schmiedge chipped in seven.  Vidovich added eight digs, while Miller contributed four service aces.

Junior Lauren Mason (Peachtree City, Ga.) and sophomore Justine Lanchester (Downs, Ill.) paced the Blue Hose with 12 and 10 kills, respectively.  Lanchester served up three aces, while freshman Julie Hollrah (Glenwood, Md.) helped out defensively with 12 digs.

Rollins 3, PC 1 (Box Score)
Presbyterian came out strong against the Tars, taking game one 30-28.  However, the Blue Hose rally was short-lived as Rollins stormed back to 30-27 and 30-23 victories in the next two games.  The Tars took a considerable lead in the fourth and deciding game but PC put together strong run, going ahead 29-27.  The Blue Hose, however, were unable to hold off for the win and fell 34-32 in the fourth game.

Lanchester was in charge for PC with 14 kills, while senior Danielle Gill (Kings Mountain, N.C.) added 12 and Mason chipped in 11.  Hollrah was once again the defensive leader with 16 digs and junior Jodi Palmer (Plain City, Ohio) notched 13 from her libero position.  Palmer also served up four aces.

Presbyterian will close out action at the AASU/Chatham Orthopaedics Classic tomorrow, Sept. 9 as the Blue Hose face USC Aiken at 9 a.m. and Eckerd College at 3 p.m.
