Blue Hose Close Action at AASU/Chatham Orthopaedics Classic with Two Losses

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The 2006 Armstrong Atlantic State University/Chatham Orthopaedics Pirate Classic wrapped up Saturday with the Presbyterian College volleyball team heading back to the Clinton campus with two more losses.  The Blue Hose (5-7) dropped a 3-1 (23-30, 30-27, 20-30, 22-30) decision to USC Aiken in the morning then PC was swept by Eckerd College, 23-30, 27-30, 25-30.

USC Aiken improved to 10-2 on the season with its four-game victory over the Blue Hose.  The Pacers had five players with double digit digs and two with 10 block assists each.  Stefanie Durham led USC Aiken offense with 18 kills, while Shanon Sumter and Missy Deardorff added 12 and 11, respectively.  Defensively, Hayden Johnson recorded 15 digs and two service aces.  Cheryl Barcas, who led the game with four aces, contributed 45 assists and 14 digs.

Freshman Julie Hollrah (Glenwood, Md.) and senior Danielle Gill (Kings Mountain, N.C.) led PC with 11 and 10 kills, while junior Jodi Palmer (Plain City, Ohio) picked up 16 digs and a pair of aces.

Eckerd was in complete control of the first game as the Tritons never trailed.  The closest that the Blue Hose came was being down 24-20.

The second game was closer with two tied scores and one lead change as PC knotted the game at 25-25 with an 11-4 run.  However, Eckerd used three kills, a PC attack error, and a service ace to clinch the 30-27 victory.

In the last game, there were four tied scores and two lead changes but the Tritons were able to pull out the 30-25 win with a .325 hitting percentage on 21 kills and eight errors in 40 attempts.

Lydee Benoit led three players in double digit kills with 16 followed by Angela White with 12 and Keisha Carter with 11.  Benoit was helpful on defensive with 12 digs, while Kelly Morrisroe provided the match ending ace in game three and added 10 digs.

Junior Lauren Mason (Peachtree City, Ga.) was the only Blue Hose in double figures with 12 kills and 10 digs, while sophomore Rachel Lewis (Bloomington, Ill.) dished out 28 assists and notched 11 digs.

Presbyterian looks to snap its five-match losing streak on Tuesday, Sept. 12 when the Blue Hose host the Buccaneers of Charleston Southern University at 7 p.m. in Ross E. Templeton Center.
