First Day of Blue Hose Volleyball Tournament Complete
Francis Marion Goes 2-0

CLINTON, S.C. – The first day of action at the Third Annual Blue Hose Volleyball Tournament concluded on Friday with Francis Marion University squad going 2-0 with back-to-back 3-0 sweeps of its opponents.  The tournament wraps up tomorrow with three matches on the central court at Templeton Gymnasium.

North Carolina Central 3, Presbyterian 1 (30-22, 21-30, 32-30, 30-28)
North Carolina Central evened its record on the season against Presbyterian at 1-1 with a four-game win over the Blue Hose in PC’s first match of the Blue Hose Tournament. 

Shari Matthews (Bridgetown, Barbados), who finished the contest with 35 kills on 66 attacks, led the Eagles.  In total in the four-game match, NCCU garnered 70 kills, meaning Matthews tallied half of them.

Presbyterian (7-19) in the loss was led by freshman Julie Hollrah’s (Glenwood, Md.) 17 kills and 17 digs.  Sophomore Justine Lanchester (Downs, Ill.) was the only other PC volleyball player to finish with double-digit kills at 11.

Francis Marion 3, Catawba 0 (34-32, 30-19, 30-23)
After a highly contested first game in which Francis Marion escaped with a 34-32 win, the Patriots easily picked victories in the second and third games.  Three players with double-figure kills led FMU to the sweep of Catawba. 

Jackie Phiel (Amherst, Ohio) led the Patriots with 14 kills, while Jessica Lombardi (Massillon, Ohio) and Lezlie Logan (Cleburne, Texas) each contributed 12.  Jenna Kaiser (Broomfield, Ohio) dished out 44 assists and Jessica Strader (Kettering, Ohio) digged 12 kill attempts.

The Lady Indians suffered the loss despite 20 kills from Melissa Powers (Bennett, N.C.).  Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, Va.) also had a double-digit performance with 11, while notching 13 digs as well.  Andi Henderson (Swansboro, N.C.) handed out 40 assists and 11 digs.

No. 10 Florida Gulf Coast 3, Catawba 0 (30-19, 30-23, 30-16)
Florida Gulf Coast, who is currently in a three way tie for first-place in the South region, had no problems earning a 3-0 sweep of Catawba to extend its win streak to 18 consecutive matches.   

The trio of Ericka Fonseca (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), Heather Van Olst (Loxahatchee, Fla.), and Brooke Youngquist (Fort Myers, Fla.) piloted the Eagles’ attack to victory.  Van Olst tallied 15 kills and 10 digs, while Youngquist added 14 kills and Fonseca finished with 13.  As a team, FGCU combined for 14 team blocks.

Missy Bartholomew (New Carlisle, Ind.) and Griffith contributed on the defense with 15 and 12 digs, respectively, while Griffith added eight kills.

Francis Marion 3, North Carolina Central 0 (30-22, 30-18, 30-23)
Francis Marion (21-6) picked up its second three-game sweep in a four-hour span at the Blue Hose Tournament as the Patriots downed North Carolina Central (22-10) in the final match of the first day of the tournament.  Francis Marion has now won four straight matches. 

Jenna Kaiser finished the match for the Patriots with 33 assists, while teammate Lezlie Logan compiled a team-high 12 kills.

North Carolina Central’s Rachel Walters had 12 kills for the Eagles in the loss.  Matthews’ production dipped quite a bit from NCCU’s win over Presbyterian, but Matthews ended the day with a double-digit showing again with 11 kills against FMU.  In total, Matthews commandeered 46 kills on day one of the tournament.
