BLUE HOSE VOLLEYBALL TO DIG FOR A CURE

CLINTON, S.C. – Come out and cheer on the Presbyterian College volleyball team on Friday night and make a difference in breast cancer research.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and head coach Chris Belshe announced today that the Blue Hose have designated Friday’s match at 7 p.m. against South Atlantic Conference opponent, Mars Hill College, as “Dig for the Cure” night.

All the proceeds raised by the Blue Hose Friday night will go directly to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Greenville affiliate.  To donate, individual sponsors can pledge money per dig earned by the team in the match or can make a flat donation to the cause.  Donation buckets will be set up at the entrance to Ross E. Templeton Gym for fans to make donations as they walk in to the gym.

As well as helping out a great cause, spectators will also have the chance to serve for mystery prizes between the second and third games of the match.

“Dig for the Cure” is a growing volleyball tradition that was started by Lisa Marston, the head volleyball coach at UNC-Charlotte, three years ago.  Through this program, the Charlotte 49ers and volleyball coaches nationwide have raised more than $36,000 for the Komen Foundation.

Participating schools designate one home volleyball match either in October or November.  In 2006, each Atlantic 10 program is scheduled to participate, as well as 11 other teams from the ACC, PAC-10, Big 12, C-USA, and the South Atlantic Conference.  In all, 37 institutions will participate in 26 matches dedicated to “Dig for the Cure.”  Along with Presbyterian, Tusculum College and Catawba College have picked their October 27th match to highlight National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36.  Today, the Foundation is an international organization with a network of more than 75,000 volunteers working through local affiliates and events like the Komen Race for the Cure® to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.  Together with its affiliate network, corporate partners and generous donors, the Komen Foundation has raised more than $740 million for the fight against breast cancer.

Anyone interested in pledging money or making a donation to this year's Dig for the Cure effort can contact Blue Hose head coach Chris Belshe e-mailing him at cdbelshe@presby.edu or 864-833-8538.  You can also send in a check made out to Susan G. Komen Foundation Greenville Affiliate to:
