Blue Hose Claim 3-1 Victory over Mars Hill on Senior Night CLINTON, S.C. – Senior Danielle Gill (Kings Mountain, N.C.) had a memorable Senior Night as the Presbyterian College volleyball team garnered its second South Atlantic Conference win of the season with a 3-1 (30-15, 28-30, 30-21, 30-16) victory over Mars Hill College on Friday night. Tonight was also ‘Dig for the Cure’ night in connection with October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Blue Hose fans helped to raise over $500 in flat donations for the Greenville chapter of the Susan B. Komen Foundation. Individuals also had the opportunity to pledge money per dig earned by Presbyterian in the match. The Blue Hose finished the night with 86 total digs so school officials will wait for those donations to be turned in to determine the exact amount of money raised on ‘Dig for the Cure’ night. Gill, the only senior on this year’s squad, notched her sixth career double-double with 17 kills and 12 digs as well as serving up a match-high five aces. Freshman Julie Hollrah (Glenwood, Md.) also had a strong offensive night for Presbyterian (9-23, 2-11 SAC) as Hollrah registered 19 kills, while junior Lauren Mason (Peachtree City, Ga.) contributed 13. Hollrah and Mason also recorded double-digit digs with 15 and 20, respectively. After the Blue Hose breezed to a 30-15 win in the first game, Mars Hill (11-19, 2-11 SAC) rallied in game two for the 30-28 victory. Eight kills by freshman Courtney Krieger (Phoenix, Ariz.) allowed the Lions to knot the match at 1-1. Freshman Danielle Silvers (Waynesville, N.C.), who had six kills in the second game win, finished the match with 17 kills to pace Mars Hill, while Krieger added 13 on the night. Defensively, junior Tiffany Oreka (Chesapeake, Va.) digged up 30 Blue Hose attempts. Presbyterian took control of the next two games to pick up its second league win of 2006. Sophomore Rachel Lewis (Bloomington, Ill.) assisted on 51 of the Blue Hose’s 63 kills. The Blue Hose played well at the net as well as PC combined for 12 total blocks on the night with sophomore Justine Lanchester (Downs, Ill.) earned a match-high eight blocks. The Blue Hose will wrap up South Atlantic Conference regular-season play tomorrow when Presbyterian hosts the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College at 1 p.m. in Templeton Gym. Mars Hill will swing over to Newberry College in Newberry, S.C. for its final SAC match of the regular-season against the Indians at 11 a.m. |
