Blue Hose Volleyball Split Action at Ramada Limited Azalea Classic

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Presbyterian College volleyball team went 1-1 during the first day of action at the two-day Ramada Limited Azalea Classic hosted by Valdosta State University.  The Blue Hose dropped a 3-1 (28-30, 30-20, 25-30, 19-30) decision to Saint Leo University before winning a five-game match (30-28, 30-24, 26-30, 16-30, 15-13) against the host Lady Blazers.  Presbyterian is now 4-2 on the season.

The Blue Hose could not find their stride against Saint Leo (3-1) as the Lions held PC’s hitting to below or near .100 for all four games.  Saint Leo maintained its three-match winning streak alive with the win against the Blue Hose.

After the Lions took game one by a score of 30-28, PC won the second game handily as the Blue Hose came out on top, 30-20.  Saint Leo regrouped during the three minute break between games, coming back to take the next two games including a convincing 30-19 victory in the fourth.

Leading the offensive charge for the Lions was freshman Chelsea Armer (San Jose, Calif.) with her double-double of 16 kills and 16 digs.  Senior Erin Oberlin and sophomore Audrey Starkebaum (Sterling, Colo.) contributed 14 and 10 kills, respectively, while sophomore Amanda Cook (West Palm Beach, Fla.) digged up 15 kill attempts.  As a team, Saint Leo registered 12 blocks with eight (one solo, seven assists) coming off the hands of sophomore Emily Frey (Mason, Ohio).

Freshman Julie Hollrah (Glenwood, Md.) and junior Lauren Mason (Peachtree City, Ga.) continue to be the Blue Hose offensive leaders on the court.  Hollrah led the squad with 15 kills and added 17 digs and Mason chipped in 11 kills and 17 digs as well.  Junior Jodi Palmer (Plain City, Ohio) notched a game-high 20 digs.

Presbyterian returned to its winning ways as four Blue Hose recorded double-digit digs and three registered double figure kills.  PC won the first two games before the Lady Blazers (1-6) captured the next two to force the deciding fifth game.  The Blue Hose hit .345 in the second game, their highest attack percentage thus far at the tournament.

Mason put up her fifth consecutive double-double of the season with 19 kills and 11 digs, while Hollrah posted her third straight with 16 kills and 13 digs.  Palmer notched a career-high 23 digs from her libero position and senior Danielle Gill (Kings Mountain, N.C.) served up four aces.  Junior Courtney VanDusen (Peoria, Ill.) added 11 kills, while sophomore Rachel Lewis (Bloomington, Ill.) contributed 51 assists and 14 digs.

Laura Lee Atkinson was the bright spot for the Lady Blazers with her 19 kills and 16 digs, while Nancy Marin was effective on all fronts with 17 digs, 12 kills and five service aces.  Grace George tallied a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs, while Niki Patriarca dished out 52 assists.
