PC Freshman Carney Scores Two In Season-Opening Loss For PC

BELMONT, N.C. – Belmont Abbey used a balanced attack to defeat Presbyterian College 16-5 Saturday afternoon in the women’s lacrosse season opener for both teams.

The Crusaders improve to 1-0 on the year while PC drops to 0-1.

Freshman Ali Carney led Presbyterian with two goals in her first intercollegiate game. Freshman Brittni Dulaney (Rome, Ga.) added a goal and an assist.

The Abbey took control of the match early by scoring three consecutive goals in the first five minutes of the match.

After the Blue Hose got on the scoreboard at the 24:35 mark, freshman Laurie Jordan answered 15 seconds later with her second goal of the match to make it 4-1.

Freshman Brianna Dignan scored the first of her four goals on the day to make it 5-1 at the 17:42 mark.

Presbyterian closed the half out strong and trailed 7-3 at the break.

PC’s Trista Sturdivant (Street, Md.) scored just over a minute into the second period to cut the margin to three goals, but it was as close as the visitors would get in the contest.

The Abbey rattled off the next nine goals, including three in the three minutes following Sturdivant’s opener, to put the game away.

Presbyterian scored the final goal of the match with 9:17 remaining when Berkley Aiken (Charlotte, N.C.) scored an unassisted goal.

Dignan’s four goals led all scorers, while Megan Darley and Jordan both added three goals and two assists.

Farden scored three goals for Belmont Abbey while Samantha Hooker, Chrissy Stokes, and Theora Canonica each tallied once.

Sophomore Kate Gavin earned the win, playing 52 minutes with five saves before giving way to freshman Sarah Popovich.

Kira Stringer (Marietta, Ga.) started in goal for the Blue Hose, playing 51 minutes and recording 10 saves in the loss.
