SLOAN NAMED TEAM MVP AT BLUE HOSE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ANNUAL BANQUET

CLINTON, S.C. — Presbyterian College’s Rachel Sloan (Greenville, SC) was honored as the women’s basketball Team MVP at the program’s annual banquet held Tuesday night.

Sloan, a 6-0 senior center, was named team MVP for the third straight season after earning Kodak All-American honors, the first in program history. In addition she earned Daktronics first team All-Region squad for the third consecutive season. She is also a three-time Kodak All-American and SAC Player of the Year selection. The former Carolina Academy standout finishes her career in a Blue Hose uniform as the program’s all-time leading scorer (1,889) and rebounder (1,034). She is one of only seven players in South Atlantic Conference history to reach 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in their career. In addition, Sloan is the league’s all-time leader in career field goals made (691) and free throws made (462) while ranking, 3rd in career scoring (1,889), 3rd in career FG% (54.7%), 4th in steals (264), and 6th in career rebounds (1,034) and tied for first in SAC history in career games played (121). This season Sloan averaged 17.7 points per game, 8.4 rebounds, 0.80 blocks, 2.7 assists, 1.9 steals while shooting 51.5% from the field, 24.4% from the three-point line and 78.1% from the charity stripe. She tallied 11 double-doubles (pts-rbs) this season and ends her career with 41. She also finished the season ranking in the following SAC statistical categories: 4th scoring, T-5th steals, 6th FG%, 5th rebs, 5th blocks, 7th FT%.

Blue Hose head coach Beth Couture cited 14 players as letterwinners for the 2000-01 season. Presbyterian compiled a 22-8 record this season, finished second in the South Atlantic Conference regular season, and was ranked #23 in the final WBCA/USA Today NCAA Division II top 25 of the season. Other Blue Hose award winners included:

Chittam (Lancaster, SC), a junior guard, played in 25 games with one starting assignment. She averaged  3.2 points and 1.0 assists while shooting 29.8% from three-point range.

Misner (Decatur, GA), a junior forward/center, saw action in 26 games with two starting assignments. She averaged 2.5 points, 2.7 rebounds while shooting 45.8% from the field. Misner finished second on the team in blocks (18) and added 10 steals.

Monroe (Tuscaloosa, AL), a senior guard and co-captain played in 15 games with two starting assignments. She averaged 1.6 points and 1.8 assists this season including dishing out a career-high 10 assists in PC’s 83-51 win over Newberry College in senior night.

Werner (Kennesaw, GA), a freshman guard played in all 30 games with 24 starting assignments. She averaged 6.0 points and 1.5 assists while tying for the team lead in assists (2.8). Werner was named to the Ron Walker/Kennesaw State University All-Tournament team and was selected to the South Atlantic Conference All-Freshman squad this season.

Woody (Mauldin, SC), senior guard/forward played in all 30 games with 29 starting assignments and averaged 12.4 points per game, 4.0 rebounds, 0.50 blocks, 2.8 assists, 1.8 steals while shooting 45.6% from the field, 34.6% from the three-point line and 71.2% from the charity stripe. She was named Tournament MVP at the Horton Homes/Georgia College & State University Tournament and was a All-SAC selection.  The former Mauldin High School standout finishes her career in a Blue Hose uniform as the most decorated basketball player in program history ranking sixth in career points (1,292), fifth in career rebounds (600), seventh in career assists (309), third in career steals (249), and 13th in career blocks (34). In addition, Woody is the South Atlantic Conference’s all-time leader in career starts (119), tied for first in SAC history in career games played (121), and her steals total is also tied for 6th best in league history. This season Woody reached two significant milestones, the first is becoming the 12th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau and the second milestone is to become one of only five players in SAC women’s basketball history to compile 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 300 assists, and 200 steals in their career. In addition, her steals total is also tied for 6th best in league history.

The senior class of Monroe, Sloan, and Woody  will go down as the most successful class in program history with a four season record of 97-24 including a 48-10 record in South Atlantic Conference play. Their league record is one of the best for a senior class in SAC history and they have also led the Blue Hose to four consecutive 20-win seasons. Among the honors that this group has won during their career is three straight SAC regular season and tournament titles, three straight trips to the NCAA Division II National Tournament and a school and SAC-record 28-win season a year ago.
