SOUTH ATLANTIC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
PRESEASON ALL CONFERENCE TEAMS ANNOUNCED

HICKORY, NC - The 2000-01 Men’s and Women’s preseason All-SAC teams were announced today at the SAC Basketball Press Conference held at the Catawba Valley Community Center Multipurpose Facility, home of the 2001 Food Lion SAC Basketball Tournament, March 2-3.

The women’s preseason First Team All-SAC team has several familiar faces. Rachel Sloan of Presbyterian College, Toni Leopard of Presbyterian, Denise Shelton of Mars Hill College and Tricia Peckham of Wingate University were all First-Team All-SAC honorees last year. Rounding out the first team is Tracy Woody of Presbyterian, who was a Second-Team selection last year.

Sloan, a two-time Kodak All-American, returns after leading the league in steals, while ranking in the top 10 in six other statistical categories. Leopard led the Blue Hose in scoring last season. She scored a game-high 28 points in the semifinals of the NCAA South Atlantic Regional, where she also earned All-Tournament honors. Woody averaged 11.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.77 steals and earned SAC All-Tournament honors.

Shelton was the SAC’s leading scorer a year ago, pouring in 21.9 points per game. Peckham led Wingate in scoring (18.4) and assists (4.9).

Lakai Brice of Catawba College and Tracy Naidas of Lenoir-Rhyne College headline the Second Team. Both were Second-Team All-SAC selections last season. Joining them are Temeshia Dawkins of Wingate, Vukko Timola of Catawba and Kristy Ray of Mars Hill.

Brice led the Lady Indians in scoring (13.1), assists (3.6) and steals (71). Her teammate Timola set a school record in 3-point shooting, connecting on 54 of 129, and was second on the team in scoring. Naidas was the SAC’s third-leading scorer a year ago, averaging 17.1 points per game. Dawkins led Wingate in rebounding (9.6) and was second in scoring (15.3). Ray finished second in the league last year in 3-point field goal percentage (39.2).
