PC's Werner goes for a career-high 16 points in victory

CLINTON, SC - Presbyterian College freshman point guard Bonnie Werner (Kennesaw, GA) scored a career-high 16 points to lead the Blue Hose to a 79-48 win over Lander University in women's NCAA Division II basketball action Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Hose shook off a sluggish start to jump out to a 35-24 advantage at the half. Werner did most of her damage in the first half, scoring 10 points and dishing out three assists.

PC caught fire to open the second half and went on a 17-4 run in the first five minutes to go ahead 49-28 with 14:20 remaining. The Blue Hose never looked back and increased their lead to as many as 32 points (76-44) with :42 seconds remaining. 

PC's defense was the story of the game, holding Lander to only one field goal for eight minutes in the second half and forced 36 turnovers on 19 Blue Hose steals. Lander struggled from the field, shooting 37.8% for the game while PC shot 43.7% and was 12-of-16 from the charity stripe.

Joining Werner for PC scoring honors was senior wing Tracy Woody (Mauldin, SC) who scored 12 points and became only the 12th player in Blue Hose women's basketball history to surpass the 1,000-point plateau. Woody added five rebounds, five assists, and five steals. Rounding out the double figure scorers was senior forward Rachel Sloan (Greenville, SC) who had 10 points and four rebounds.

Lander was led by sophomore forward Krissy Hatfield (Harlan, Ky) who scored a team-high 13 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. Joining Hatfield was junior guard Angel Vaughn (Dixmoor, Ill) who added 10 points and three assists.

Presbyterian improves to 4-3 on the season and now have won two in a row. Lander falls to 0-4 on the season.

The Blue Hose return to action on Tuesday, November 28 when they travel to Florence to take on #19 Francis Marion University at 6:00 pm. The game will be a rematch of last year's NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional semifinal game the Patriots won 82-79.
