PRESBYTERIAN FALLS TO MARS HILL 83-76

MARS HILL, NC - The Mars Hill College women's basketball team hosted South Atlantic Conference (SAC) rival Presbyterian College (PC) tonight in Stanford Arena.  The Lady Lions (3-1, 10-3) knocked off Presbyterian (3-1, 12-5) with an 83-76 win.

In the opening game, PC jumped out to a seven-point (11-4) lead with 17:21 on the clock after junior guard Katie Davis (Gainesville, GA) hit a three-pointer.  PC went on to lead by as many as 15 points (39-24) in the first half with 3:42 left until intermission when Davis nailed another shot from behind the arc. The Blue Hose went into the locker room with an 11-point (45-34) lead.

PC maintained a comfortable lead until the 9:18 mark when sophomore guard Holly Carringer (Murphy, NC) hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to only four points (60-56).  Mars Hill tied the game at 64 with 5:23 left in the game after senior guard Kristy Ray (Weaverville, NC) hit a 12-foot jumper.

The Lady Lions took their first lead of the game (67-66) with 4:22 left in the contest after Carringer hit another three-pointer. On PC's next possession senior guard Tracy Woody (Mauldin, SC) was fouled but hit only one-of-two free throws.  Junior wing Denise Shelton (Cambridge, IN) answered the tie scoring two of her team high 20 points and the Lady Lions never trailed the remainder of the game.  After a PC turnover, Carringer hit another three-pointer to give Mars Hill a five-point (72-67) advantage with 3:33 on the clock.  Mars Hill was tagged with a technical foul on an in bounds pass and junior Toni Leopard (Ninety-Six, SC) hit the free throw.

Senior forward Rachel Sloan (Greenville, SC) cut the lead to two points (72-70) but that was as close as the Blue Hose would get.  Mars Hill went on to win 83-76.

Shelton led Mars Hill with 20 points scoring 14 of those points in the second half.  Shelton also set a new career mark pulling down a game high 14 rebounds in the win.  Ray followed with 17 and junior post Maria Hickman (Statesville, NC) added 15.  Sloan led PC scoring a game high 24 points followed by Leopard with 15.
