Information Directors Select BOWIE,
MD —
Presbyterian College senior forward Toni
Leopard (Ninety-Six, SC) headlined the 2001-2002
Daktronics South Atlantic Women’s All-Region Team announced
today. Half of the 10 players selected for both the first and
second team will be competing this weekend in the first round
of the tournament and includes three conference players of the
year. Heading
the first team are Denise
Shelton (Mars Hill College), Amba
Kongolo (North Carolina Central University), Elizabeth
Biedrycki (Wingate University), Ginnell
Curtis (University of North Carolina-Pembroke) and Leopard
(Presbyterian College). Joining
their counterparts on the second team are Blanche
Doctor (Johnson C. Smith University),
Julie Szabo (University of South Carolina-Aiken), Jami Cornwell (University of South Carolina-Aiken), Betsy
Foy (Georgia College and State University and Dorthell
Little (Catawba University). Leopard
led the Blue Hose to a 21-8 record and a berth in the South
Atlantic Regional Tournament, where they will face Virginia
State University in the first round. She claimed post-season
honors from the SAC including a spot on the 2002 All-SAC First
Team and the 2002 SAC All-Tourney Team. During the SAC
Tournament, Leopard averaged 24 points-per-game while
connecting on 25-of-27 free throws. Heading into the
tournament, Leopard is averaging 17.7 points and 6.9 rebounds
per-game while hitting just under 92 percent (131-143) of her
free throw attempts. Shelton
was the 2002 South Atlantic Conference Co-Player of the Year
and was the SAC Tournament’s Most Valuable Player while
leading the Lady Lions to the title. During the tournament,
Shelton averaged 27.7 points and 7.7 rebounds-per-game.
Shelton led the conference in scoring and 3-point field goal
percentage, averaging 22.4 points and shooting .415,
respectively. The forward was also a presence on the boards as
she averaged 8.5 rebounds-per-game. The Lady Lions received a
bye in the first round of the South Atlantic Regional
Tournament. Kongolo
was the 2002 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association
Player of the Year and she was named to the 2002 CIAA
All-Tournament Team. During tournament play, the center from
Kinshasa, Congo, averaged 22 points, 17 rebounds and six
blocked shots-per-game. Biedrycki
joined Shelton as the SAC Co-Player of the Year for her
dominating performance during the regular season. She was
first in the conference in rebounding (12.8 rpg), and field
goal percentage (.645), while finishing second in scoring
(21.4 ppg) and blocked shots (1.6 bpg). During the year she
recorded 20 double-doubles and was the conference player of
the week twice. For
her performance during the 2001-2002 season, Curtis was named
to the Peach Belt Athletic Conference First Team
All-Conference Team as well as the 2002 PBAC Women's
All-Tournament Team. Curtis led the Lady Braves to an 18-9
record and finished her career as the school's second-leading
scorer. During the year she averaged 23 points and 4.4
assists-per-game. Those
players selected for the All-Region First Team will now be
placed on the ballot for the Daktronics All-America Team.
