Women’s team begins preseason in preparation for 2001-02 season

CLINTON, SC — Presbyterian College women’s basketball teams opened preseason practice in preparation for the upcoming 2001-02 season this week.

Head Coach Beth Couture enters her 13th-year atop the Blue Hose women’s basketball program. Couture returns three starters and nine letterwinners from last season’s squad which posted a 22-8 overall record and finished tied for second in the South Atlantic Conference regular season.

“We are very excited about finally beginning practice,” said Couture. “Our enthusiasm and work ethic has been at its highest to start preseason. We have a great blend of freshmen talent and veteran leadership which we hope will produce a successful season.”

The Blue Hose are led by All-SAC performer, senior forward Toni Leopard. Leopard, a native of Ninety-Six, SC, averaged 13.8 points and 4.7 rebounds while shooting 87.8% from the charity stripe. Joining Leopard is returning starters sophomore point guard Bonnie Werner and senior guard Katie Davis. Werner, a native of Kennesaw, GA, averaged 6.0 points and 2.8 assists while shooting 78.3% from the free throw line. Werner started 24 of 30 games as a true freshman. Davis, a native of Gainesville, GA, averaged 8.5 points, 2.1 assists while shooting 32.9% from three-point range.

The Blue Hose officially begin practice on October 15 and open the 2001-02 season at home on November 11 as they host the Low Country All-Stars in exhibition action starting at 3:00 pm.
