Blue Hose Sweep Double-Header from Lions in Basketball

MARS HILL, NC - Mars Hill was swept by SAC rival Presbyterian College in a basketball double-header tonight in Stanford Arena. In the opening contest, the Lady Lions (9-2/19-3) ranked 9th in the latest USA Today/ESPN/WBCA National Poll fell to Presbyterian 76-61.  Presbyterian's men won, 57-53.

Mars Hill's women fell to 9-2 in the SAC and 19-3 overall with the loss.  Presbyterian's women's team improved to 7-4 in the league and 16-7 overall.  Presbyterian's defense held the Lady Lions to convert on only 37.3% of their field goals and 13.3% of their 3-point attempts to win by 15.  The Blue Hose' defense held Denise Shelton (Cambridge, IN), the Nation's second leading scorer, to 13 points.  Shelton only recorded a single point in the first half.  Presbyterian led by 10 (38-28) at the intermission.

In the second half, Presbyterian went on a 14-to-8 run to lead by 16 points with 14:04 left in the contest after Bonnie Werner (Kennesaw, GA) hit a jumper.  Mars Hill would trim the lead to five points (56-61) with 5:59 on the clock after Shelton converted two foul shots but that was as close as the Lady Lions would get.  Presbyterian answered with 10 unanswered points to go ahead 71-56 with 3:08 left to play.

Nicole Chittam (Lancaster, SC) and Dana Birnie (Suwanee, GA) led Presbyterian with 15 points apiece.  It was Chittam's career high.  Werner followed with 14.

Holly Carringer (Murphy, NC) led Mars Hill with 15 points followed by Shelton with 13 and Serena Roberts (Andrews, NC) who added 11 off the bench.  Key stats of the game: PC scored 23 points off Mars Hill turnovers ... PC received 27 points off the bench ... PC held Mars Hill to convert on only 37.3% of their field goals and 13.3% of their 3-pointers ... PC committed only eight turnovers.
