WINGATE HOLDS ON FOR 68-67 WIN OVER BLUE HOSE
Wingate’s Biedrycki leads five Bulldogs in double figures with 16 points

CLINTON, SC — Wingate University’s senior center Elizabeth Biedrycki (Charlotte, NC) scored 16 points with 11 rebounds to lead five Bulldogs in double figures in a 87-86 win over Presbyterian College in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action Wednesday night.

Presbyterian took an early 10-4 lead at the 15:24 mark, but the Bulldogs fought back to tie the game at 12-12 at the 12:31 mark on a 8-2 run highlighted by by a pair of baskets by Biedrycki. The Blue Hose regained the lead but could not pull away from the Bulldogs.

Wingate took their first lead of the game at the 4:41 mark of the first half (26-24) on a jumper by senior forward Katie Laettner (Angola, NY). Wingate would use a 6-2 run the end the half and take a 32-26 lead into intermission. Wingate shot 55.6% from the field in the first half while Presbyterian struggled to shoot 31.6% before intermission.

The second half saw Wingate go ahead by eight points at 34-26, but the Blue Hose fought back and used a 9-2 run to retake the lead at 36-35 with 17:40 remaining. Both teams exchanged the lead five more times until the Blue Hose took the lead at the a pair of free throws by senior forward Toni Leopard (Ninety-Six, SC) at 50-48 with 8:19 remaining in the game. 

Presbyterian pushed the lead to as many as four points (60-56), but the Bulldogs fought back and retook the lead at the 2:09 mark when Bulldog senior Elizabeth Rogers (Raleigh, NC) scored on a fast break layup giving Wingate the lead for good at 65-61. Sophomore guard Julie Law (Waxhaw, NC) scored the last four points for the Bulldogs to seal the win.

Wingate was led by Biedrycki’s 16 points and 11 rebounds while Laettner added 14 points and seven rebounds. Law scored 12 points off the bench while Rogers and junior guard Cathy Crutchfield (Concord, NC) each added 11 points.

Presbyterian was led in scoring by Leopard who scored a game-high 23 points with 11 rebounds. Freshman forward Dana Birnie (Suwanee, GA) added 16 points and five rebounds for the Blue Hose.

Wingate improves to 11-8 overall and 3-6 in the SAC while Presbyterian falls to 14-7 overall and 5-4 in the league.
