BLUE HOSE CRUSH NEWBERRY 82-51 BEHIND LEOPARD’S 26 POINTS IN SAC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ACTION

NEWBERRY, SC-- Presbyterian College senior forward Toni Leopard (Ninety-Six, SC) scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Blue Hose to 81-52 win over Newberry College in the South Atlantic Conference regular season finale for both teams Saturday night.

The game was tied at 5-5 when PC went on a 13-0 run to take a 13-5 lead and never look back. The lead grew to as many as 20 points at 42-22 entering intermission. Leopard led the Blue Hose in the first half with 15 points and at one point was outscoring the Lady Indians 13-11. The Blue Hose shot 48.5% from the field in the first half while holding Newberry to only 29.2%. Sophomore guard Bonnie Werner (Kennesaw, GA) added 10 points and six assists before intermission.

PC continued their dominance in the second half of the depleted Lady Indians. Newberry dressed only eight players for the game. The lead grew to 29 points twice after halftime with the last time coming at the end of the game. Every Blue Hose player that dressed played in the game and all but two scored. 

Leopard scored 26 points on the night on eight-of-13 shooting from the field including three-of-five from three-point range. Her point total moved the senior into second place on the program’s all-time scoring list with 1,651 career points. She passed former Blue Hose standout Leah McCullough (1986-90) who tallied 1,634 career points. She added seven rebounds while Werner compiled a impressive line of 16 points, six assists, eight rebounds, and three assists. Senior center Ja’Net Vicks (Greer, SC) added nine points and eight rebounds while junior guard Billie Haskins (Greensboro, GA) added eight points. 

Newberry was led by senior center Shawanna Cook who tallied her 25th career double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Joining Cook in scoring was freshman guard Shirolyn Johnson who tallied 14 points and three steals.

Presbyterian improves to 19-7 overall and 10-4 in SAC action and will be the #2 seed in next week’s Food Lion/SAC Tournament. Newberry falls to 2-24 overall, 0-14 in league play and will be the #8 seed. PC will host a first round game in the Food Lion/SAC Tournament on Tuesday, February 26 against the #7 seeded Tusculum College Lady Pioneers. Gametime set for 7:00 pm at the Ross E. Templeton Center. Newberry will travel to top seed Mars Hill College on Tuesday for a 7:00 pm tip-off.
