Saturday, January 5, 2002 LEOPARD'S
19 POINTS LIFTS #11 BLUE HOSE PAST PIONEERS GREENEVILLE,
TN --- Presbyterian College senior Toni
Leopard scored 19 points to guide the #11 Blue Hose
(9-3, 1-0) to a 70-56 win over Tusculum College (5-7, 0-1)
Saturday afternoon at Alpine Arena. Tusculum
senior Kristen New (Russell, Ky.) matched Leopard with 19 points of her
own, including five-of-six from behind the three-point arc.
This is the second game in a row that New has dropped
in five trifectas. Tusculum
jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, thanks to a trey by New.
But the Blue Hose battled back and a jumper by Merritt
Misner at the 13:49 mark gave PC their first lead of
the game. PC
gradually extended the lead to as many as 13 points before
heading into halftime with a 38-28 lead.
New led all scorers with 13 points at the break. In
the second half, the Pioneers closed the gap to four, holding
Presbyterian without a field goal until 15:23 when a Ja'Net
Vicks' layup made it
44-36 in favor of PC. Whitley
Campbell's jumper on TC's next possession pulled the
Pioneers to within six, but the Pioneers were unable to get
within nine points the rest of the way.
Bonnie
Werner helped PC ice the win by going nine-of-ten from
the free throw line in the second half. Leopard
and New shared game-high honors with 19 points. Campbell and Presbyterian senior Nicole Chittam shared game-high honors
for rebounds with seven. Tusculum
and Presbyterian resume their conference schedules on
Wednesday. Tusculum
entertains Catawba College at 6 p.m., while PC travels to play
Wingate University. Tip-off
is set for 6 p.m. |
