WERNER NAMED TEAM MVP AT BLUE HOSE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ANNUAL BANQUET 

CLINTON, S.C. — Presbyterian College’s Bonnie Werner (Kennesaw, Ga.) was honored as the women’s basketball Team MVP at the program’s annual banquet held last Thursday night. 

Werner, a 5-5 junior point guard, was named team MVP after earning second team All-South Atlantic Conference honors. The former Harrison High School standout averaged 14.7 points per game, 4.8 assists, 3.8 rebounds, 1.7 steals while shooting 39.1% from the field, 32.0% from the three-point line and 78.1% from the charity stripe.  

She scored in double figures on 20 occasions this season including six times with 20 or more points. In addition, she set the South Atlantic Conference Tournament single-game record with a career-high 37 points in PC’s 96-87 overtime loss to Lenoir-Rhyne College in the quarterfinals. She also finished the season ranking in the following SAC statistical categories: 3rd in assists, 10th in scoring, tied for 13th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.11:1), and 15th in made three-pointers per game (0.89). 

Blue Hose head coach Leigh Irwin cited 14 players and managers as letterwinners for the 2002-03 season. Presbyterian compiled a 12-15 overall record this season and finished tied for third in the South Atlantic Conference regular season. The team finished the season leading the South Atlantic Conference and ranking 10th in NCAA Division II in team free throw percentage (76.5%). Other Blue Hose award winners included:

Cook (Greensboro, N.C.), a freshman forward/center, played in all 27 games with 12 starting assignments. She averaged  6.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, 0.7 steals while shooting 47.3% from the field and 75.0% from the free throw line. She scored in double figures on six occasions and set her career-high with 23 points in PC’s 90-76 win over Wingate University. In addition, she posted her first collegiate double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds in PC’s 79-74 loss to Lenoir-Rhyne College. For her efforts, Cook was named to the 2002-03 SAC All-Freshmen Team. 

Day-Lewis (Blairsville, Ga.), a sophomore wing, played in all 27 games with 22 starting assignments this season. She averaged a career-best 4.1 points, 3.8 rebounds while shooting 37.4% from the field, 33.3% from three-point field goal range, and 78.4% from the free throw line. She scored in double figures on two occasions including a career-high 13 points in PC’s 62-60 win over East Stroudsburg University. 

Haskins (Greensboro, Ga.), a junior guard, started all 27 games this season en route to first team All-SAC and second team Daktronics All-South Atlantic Region honors. She averaged a career-best 18.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.9 steals while shooting 43.1% from the field, 44.1% from three-point field goal range, and 78.3% from the free throw line. This season was a breakout year for the former Gatewood School standout as she led the team in scoring, steals, three-point field goal percentage, and minutes played (35.3 per game).

She finished the season ranking second in the South Atlantic Conference in scoring and made three-point field goals per game, 4th in three-point field goal percentage, 11th in assists, and 12th in steals. Haskins was named SAC Player of the Week on two occasions (12/16, 2/3) and ended the season ranking 8th in NCAA Division II in three-point field goal percentage and 33rd in scoring average. She scored in double figures on 25 of 27 games, scored 20 or more points on 12 occasions, and led the team in scoring 15 times. Her 488 points this season and her 18.1 points per game scoring average rank ninth and fifth best in program single-season history. She set her career-high with 28 points in PC’s 76-49 win over Newberry College in the regular season finale.

Wessinger (Laurens, S.C.), a freshman forward played in all 27 games with 25 starting assignments this season. She earned 2002-03 SAC All-Freshmen Team honors after averaging 9.1 points and 3.8 rebounds while shooting 44.7% from the field and 80.0% from the free throw line. She scored in double figures on 12 occasions and posted her first collegiate double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in PC’s 80-71 overtime loss to Tusculum College. She set her career-high with 20 points on two occasions against Georgia College & State University and Anderson College this season.

Yanik (Greer, S.C.), a redshirt sophomore forward/center played in all 27 games with 17 starting assignments this season. She made a major impact this season averaging 8.8 points, a team-best 7.0 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.4 steals and led the team in blocks (12) while shooting 41.2% from the field and 69.8% from the free throw line. She scored in double figures on 12 occasions and led the team in rebounding 11 times. In addition, she posted five double-doubles this season including career-highs with 20 points and 19 rebounds in PC’s 69-60 win over Lenoir-Rhyne College.
