BLUE HOSE HOLD FOR A 78-73 WIN OVER LADY EAGLES IN SAC BASKETBALL ACTION 

CLINTON, SC – Presbyterian College placed four players in double figures led by redshirt sophomore center Lauren Yanik's (Greer, S.C.) career-high tying 20 points as the Presbyterian College defeated Carson-Newman College 78-73 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon. 

Yanik tied her career-high of 20 points to go along with 10 rebounds and a career-high seven assists to lead the Blue Hose. 

The first half saw both teams struggled to shoot the ball from the field as PC shot 27.8% while Carson-Newman struggled as well to shoot 29.7%. The game was close throughout the first frame with Carson-Newman holding a 22-19 at the 6:03 mark. The Blue Hose used a 13-2 run to end the half and go ahead 32-24 entering the locker room. 

PC’s freshman forward Wesley Campbell (Greenville, S.C.) led the way in the first half with eight points while Yanik tallied a team-high eight boards. Carson-Newman was led in the first half by senior guard Monica Ashburn (Clarkrange, Tenn.) who tallied nine points while sophomore center Tiffany Parker (Newman, Ga.) pulled down a team-best seven boards.  

The second half saw the Lady Eagles fight back as junior guard Andrea Fitzgerald (Memphis, Tenn.) scored 24 second half points to pull Carson-Newman back into the ballgame. Presbyterian fought off several Lady Eagle runs down the stretch until Carson-Newman retook the lead at 69-68 with 2:56 remaining on a lay-up by Fitzgerald. On the ensuing play, Fitzgerald stole the ball at midcourt and scored to put the Lady Eagles ahead 71-68. PC’s sophomore guard Sarah Woods (Florence, Ky) hit a pair of free throws to give the Blue Hose back the lead at 74-73 with 1:17 remaining. Woods would put the game out of reach with a three-pointer as the shot clock was about the expire with PC going ahead 77-73 with :28 seconds remaining. 

Joining Yanik for PC scoring honors was Campbell who tallied a career-high 15 points followed by freshman center Cameron Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) added 12 points and junior guard Bonnie Werner (Kennesaw, Ga.) had 10 points and six rebounds. 

Carson-Newman was led by Fitzgerald’s career-high 33 points and Ashburn’s 14 points. Parker led the team with a game-high 14 rebounds. 

PC improves to 11-11 overall, and 6-4 in the SAC while Carson-Newman falls to 12-11, 6-4 in the SAC.
