BLUE HOSE EDGE EAST STROUDSBURG 62-60 IN FINAL DAY OF MILLER INVITATIONAL

WINGATE, N.C. —The Presbyterian College Blue Hose women’s basketball team edged East Stroudsburg University 62-60 Saturday afternoon during the final day of the 2003 Miller Orthopedic Clinic Invitational. The invitational is being held in Cuddy Arena on the campus of Wingate University. 

Presbyterian (4-7) led by as much as twelve early in the second half. However, the ESU Warriors (1-9) battled back to tie the game 60-60 on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Niki Cox with nine seconds remaining. Two clutch free throws by Presbyterian junior guard Bonnie Werner (Kennesaw, GA) secured the victory for the Blue Hose. Werner led Presbyterian with 23 points, five rebounds and four assists. 

Sophomore forward Joanna Day-Lewis (Blairville, GA) also had a strong afternoon for Presbyterian. Day-Lewis tallied a career-high 13 points and five rebounds. Fellow sophomore Lauren Yanik (Greer, SC) flexed her muscles in the post for the Blue Hose, grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds. 

The sophomore tandem of Cox and Katie Wear once again led East Stroudsburg. Cox led all scorers with 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the game. Wear notched 17 points and five rebounds in the contest.

The East Stroudsburg University Warriors return to action Wednesday, January 8th, when they travel to Lock Haven. The Blue Hose will open South Atlantic Conference play Saturday, January 11th, when they host Tusculum College in a 2 p.m. match up.
