Fayetteville
State Drops Presbyterian, 84-65 HICKORY,
N.C. - In the opening game of the Lenoir-Rhyne College
Women's Basketball Classic, Fayetteville State University used
their height advantage to defeat Presbyterian College, 84-65, in
Shuford Gymnasium Friday evening.
The Broncos outrebounded the Blue Hose 52 to 29 including
29 offensive rebounds compared to eight for PC.
Danielle
Evans led Fayetteville with 20 points and five steals, while
junior guard Bonnie Werner
finished with a team-high 15 points for the Blue Hose.
Fayetteville State improved to 2-3, while PC fell to 1-5. PC scored
first on a jumper by freshman center Anna
Sheppard, but Fayetteville State slowly built an advantage
on the scoreboard and led 21-10 mid-way through the first half.
PC climbed back into the game and tied the score at 38
with 21 seconds remaining.
PC took an 84-65 lead into the locker room on two free
throws by junior guard Billie Haskins
with under a second left to give PC their first advantage since
leading 2-0. In the second
half, Fayetteville State grabbed 19 offensive rebounds to
establish an insurmountable lead on second-chance points.
The Broncos started the second half with a 14-3 run to
gain a 55-43 lead with 14:38 left in the game.
PC shot themselves in the foot with 16 second-half
turnovers and never could fully recover from Fayetteville
State's early second-half burst.
The Blue Hose closed to within 64-57, but Fayetteville
State outscoring PC, 20-8, down the stretch to capture a 84-65
victory. For the
Broncos, Bowman totaled 19 points and a team-high six rebounds,
while Lawson contributed six boards with four points and three
steals. Billie
Haskins finished with 12 points and had game-highs with six
assists and seven rebounds.
In a balanced Blue Hose offensive attack, freshman center
Cameron Cook
and Sheppard added 13 and 11 points, respectively. The Broncos
forced 27 PC turnovers while collecting 19 steals.
