HOSE RACE PAST LADY SENATORS 84-57 FOR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON CLINTON,
S.C. — Presbyterian College junior guard Billie
Haskins (Greensboro, Ga.) tallied a game-high 23 points and a career-high
10 steals as the Blue Hose defeated Lander University 84-57 in
women’s basketball action Monday night. The win was the first for
Blue Hose head coach Leigh
Irwin who replaced former coach Beth
Couture who took a similar post at Butler University last
spring. Haskins hit nine-of-15
field goals on the night and led four Blue Hose players in
double figures. PC shot 49.3% from the field for the game and
held Lander to 28.6% shooting from the field for the game. The first half was closely
contested to open as Lander took their only lead before
intermission at the 14:40 mark (12-11). The Blue Hose responded
with a 13-0 run to retake the lead at 24-12 four minutes later.
PC held the lead the rest of the half and entered intermission
with a 39-27 advantage. The Blue Hose shot 53.1% from the field
while holding the Lady Senators to 27.8% in the first half. The Blue Hose (1-4) pushed
the lead to as many as 28 points in the second half (82-54) to
put the game out of reach. PC dominated the boards holding a
54-40 advantage and limited the Lady Senators to four-of-23
shooting from three-point land for the game. Joining Haskins for scoring
honors was freshman forward Rebecca
Wessinger
(Laurens, S.C.) who tallied 15 points and nine rebounds.
Junior guard Bonnie
Werner (Kennesaw,
Ga.) came off the bench to tally 13 points and a career-high 10
assists while redshirt sophomore forward Lauren
Yanik (Greer, S.C.) added 10 points and six rebounds.
Freshman center Anna Sheppard (Norcross,
Ga.) controlled the glass with a career-high 16 rebounds to go
along with nine points. Lander (2-2) was led by
junior forward Tamika
Lomax (Raytown, MD) who tallied a team-high 22 points and
added nine rebounds. Freshman guard Kaitlyn
Katko (South Amboy, NJ) chipped in 14 points and five
rebounds. |
