Wednesday, January, 22 2003 Mars Hill and Presbyterian Split Double-Header MARS HILL, NC - The Lady Lions (2-2/9-8) pulled out an 81-78 victory over the Blue Hose (1-3/5-10) while Mars Hill's men's team (1-3/11-6) lost 64-60 to PC (2-2/15-4) tonight in Stanford Arena. Both games came down to the wire. The women's game saw 10 lead changes and five ties. Mars Hill led 50-42 at the break by converting on 60.0% (18-30) of their field goal attempts. The second half then produced eight lead changes and five ties. After going up 10 points (52-42) with 17:59 left in the game, PC went on a 10-to-2 run to cut the lead to two points (54-52) with 14:27 on the clock after Billie Haskins (Greensboro, GA) hit a layup. Mars Hill could never lead by more than six points over the next 11 minutes and watched PC take a 72-71 lead at the 3:10 mark after Lauren Yanik (Greer, SC) hit two free throws. The lead changed hands six times during the next two and a half minutes before Mars Hill took the lead for good (79-78) with 30 seconds left in regulation after Tiffany Atkins (Barnardsville, NC) hit a pair of free throws. Atkins was 12-for-13 from the line in the game and hit 8-of-8 from the charity stripe in the second half. Kristi Ferris (Knoxville, TN) led Mars Hill with 23 points and nine rebounds followed Atkins who added 21 points and eight boards. Mars Hill was 20-for-22 from the free throw line in the game, Ferris and Atkins combined for 19-of-20 of those foul shots. Haskins led the Blue Hose with a game-high 27 points nailing six 3-pointers. Bonnie Werner (Kennesaw, GA) followed Haskins with 17 points and seven assists. Mars Hill scored 42 points in the paint while PC added 12 points from Mars Hill miscues. |
