LIONS HOLD ON FOR A 74-72 WIN OVER BLUE HOSE IN WOMEN’S
BASKETBALL ACTION CLINTON,
SC – Mars Hill College junior forward Tiffany Atkins (Banardsville,
N.C.) tallied a team-high 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead
three players in double figures as the Lady Lions defeated
Presbyterian College 74-72 in SAC women’s basketball action. The game
opened with the Lady Lions taking an early 17-8 lead at the
12:36 mark. The Blue Hose came alive and used a 11-2 run to tie
the game at 19-19 with 8:33 remaining first half. Mars Hill
finished off the half on a 17-9 run to take a 36-28 halftime
lead. The Lady
Lions were led in the first half by Atkins with 18 points
and eight rebounds. The Lady Lions dominated the boards in the
first half 23-14 including six offensive rebounds. PC was led in
the first half by junior guard Billie
Haskins (Greensboro, Ga.) with seven
points. The second
half saw the Blue Hose cut the lead to four points at 36-32 with
19:24 remaining. Mars Hill responded with a 9-3 run to pull
ahead by double figures at 45-35 with 15:37 left in the game.
The Lady Lions were able to hold the lead in double figures
until PC fought back and cut the lead to 59-58 with 8:16 left.
PC was able to keep the game close down the stretch and tied the
game at 72-72 in a free throw by redshirt sophomore center Lauren
Yanik (Greer, S.C.) at the :44 second
mark. Atkins hit one of two free throws to break the tie and go
ahead 73-72. Freshman forward Kristi Ferris (Knoxville,
Tenn.) gave Mars Hill a 74-72 lead with :08 seconds remaining on
a free throw. PC had a final look as time ran out, but the shot
fell short. Joining
Atkins for scoring honors was Ferris (Knoxville, Tenn.)
and senior forward Holly Carringer (Murphy, N.C.) who
each scored 15 points apiece. PC was led by
Haskins’ 18 points while her backcourt mate, junior guard Bonnie
Werner (Kennesaw, Ga.) who tallied 21 points and three assists. Mars Hill College improves to 12-12 overall and 5-6 in the SAC while Presbyterian College falls to 11-12, 6-5 in the SAC. |
