NSU Women's Basketball Defeats Presbyterian College 77-62

Knights Get Dominant Double-Double Efforts From Rainey and Pate

Ft. Lauderdale,  FL - The Nova Southeastern University women’s basketball team (3-9) outlasted Presbyterian College 77-62, on Wednesday evening in the George Mayer Gymnasium.

 

NSU received double-double efforts from forward Charity Rainey (Sr., West Palm Beach, FL) who pulled down a game-high 12 boards, netted 18 points (all in the second half), forced three steals and swatted away 6 shots in only 21 minutes of action, while center Jessie Pate (Jr., Kissimmee, FL) led all scorers with 21 points (9-18, 3-5), and grabbed 11 rebounds.

 

The score was knotted 31-31 at the half as Presbyterian (2-6) held a 23-18 edge in rebounds and out-shot the Knights 39.4% (13-for-33) to 32.4% (11-for34) through the first 20 minutes.

 

After Rainey's layup put NSU ahead 39-37 at the 17:32 mark of the second half, the Knights never looked back and cruised to their 3rd victory of the season.  NSU built its lead to as many as 21 points with 1:17 remaining, behind the dominant post play of Pate and Rainey.

 

NSU turned up the defensive pressure and overpowered the Blue Hose in the paint over the final 20 minutes of the contest.  The Knights controlled the glass with 23 second half rebounds to 11 by the visitors. 

 

NSU also shot 50% (17-34) from the field in the second period, with Rainey going 7-14 from the field and 4-4 from the charity stripe.  Overall, NSU outscored the Blue Hose 46-24 in the paint and converted 28 points off turnovers to 4 by Presbyterian.

 

Rebecca Wessinger led Presbyterian with 17 points (7-8, 3-4) and Billie Haskins added 12 points (4-16, 1-4, 3-6) for the Blue Hose.

 

NSU returns to action tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. at home versus Bellarmine University (KY), ranked 9th nationally in NCAA Division ll women's basketball.
