BLUE HOSE SCORE EARLY, OFTEN IN ROUT AT NEWBERRY
Yanik ties career-high with 20 points in road win.

NEWBERRY, S.C. — Presbyterian center Lauren Yanik (Greer, S.C.) scored 19 of her career-high-tying 20 points in the first half as the visiting Blue Hose routed Newberry College 95-71 in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Arena.

It was Yanik's second game of scoring 20 points in the last three contests. She set her career-high of 20 points last Saturday in a home win over Lenoir-Rhyne College. After a 3-7 start, the Blue Hose have gone 5-3 since, including a 4-3 SAC record this season. Overall, PC is 8-10 halfway through conference play.

PC jumped out to a quick 14-4 lead in the first four and a half minutes thanks to jumpers by Yanik and a pair of three-point baskets by junior guard Bonnie Werner (Kennesaw, Ga.). The Lady Indians (2-16, 0-7 SAC) were able to push the margin to just two points over the next eight minutes, thanks to a couple of jumpers, one a three-pointer, by Newberry forward Tasha Farmer (McBee, S.C.). The Blue Hose managed a 31-8 run over those last eight minutes to begin the rout and lead 53-28 at the half. In addition to Yanik's 19, junior guard Billie Haskins (Greensboro, Ga.) had 14 at the break.

The Lady Indians saw the Blue Hose push the margin to 29 before putting together a 19-6 run to get the score to 74-58 with seven minutes in regulation. Newberry had nothing left in the tank and Presbyterian held on for the victory.

Haskins led all scorers with 26 points on 6-for-10 shooting from beyond the arc. Sophomore  guards Sarah Woods (Florence, Ky) and Lauren Dobson (Greenville, S.C.) came off the bench to score 12 and 11 points respectively. PC shot 50 percent (12-for-24) as a team from three-point range. To make matters worse for the Lady Indians, the Blue Hose hit all 12 of their first-half free throws, while Newberry hit only two of its four free shots in the first half. Presbyterian finished with a 21-for-26 (80.8 percent) day from the line.

Newberry had three players in double figures. Forward Shirolyn Johnson (Irmo, S.C.) led the Lady Indians with 19, while Farmer added 17 points and nine rebounds. Newberry blocked a season-high six shots, with center Kelsey Maloney (Virginia Beach, Va.) blocking four, one shy of her career-high, set on Wednesday at Carson-Newman. Point guard Brandy Carland (Arden, N.C.) had a season-high nine assists.
