PC OUTLASTS WINGATE 90-76 IN SAC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ACTION

WINGATE, N.C. The Presbyterian College women’s basketball team used a 10-0 run late in the second half to pull away from Wingate University en route to a 90-76 South Atlantic Conference victory Wednesday night. The game took place in Cuddy Arena on the campus of Wingate University.

The Bulldogs (15-6 overall, 5-4 SAC) will try and rebound this Saturday when they travel to Newberry for a 2 p.m. contest. The Blue Hose (10-11 overall, 5-4 SAC) host Carson-Newman College Saturday afternoon in a 2 p.m. battle.

The Bulldogs led by as much as ten early in the first half thanks in part to the strong play of junior guard Samantha Dailey (Huntington, W.Va.). Dailey scored 15 of her career-high 28 points in the first period. However, the Blue Hose battled back and trimmed the Wingate lead to 38-36 heading into the locker room.

Both teams traded baskets for most of the second half. Then with just over eight minutes remaining Presbyterian put together a 10-0 run and never looked back. The Blue Hose were led by junior guard Billie Haskins (Greensboro, Ga.) who scored 25 points to go along with six steals and six rebounds. Freshman forward Cameron Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) provided a spark off the bench for Presbyterian, scoring a career-high 23 points and pulling down seven boards. Redshirt sophomore center Lauren Yanik (Greer, S.C.) added 15 points and six rebounds while junior point guard Bonnie Werner (Kennesaw, Ga.) rounded out the double figure scorers for PC with 13 points and six assists.

Senior forward Jessica Guarneri (Piscataway, N.J.) had a strong game in the post for the Bulldogs. Guarneri scored 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds before fouling out with 3:48 left in the contest. Freshman center Veronica Taylor (Columbia, S.C.) recorded another double double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
