UPSET CONFERENCE LEADER CATAWBA 77-64
CLINTON,
SC Presbyterian College junior guard Billie Haskins
(Greensboro, Ga.) tallied a game-high 24 points to lead
three Blue Hose in double figures as PC upset SAC leader Catawba
College 77-64 in womens basketball action Wednesday night. The Lady
Indians (14-4, 5-1 SAC) entered the game ranked #1 in the South
Atlantic Region and had their 11-game win streak snapped. The
Blue Hose improved to 7-10 overall and 3-3 in the SAC with the
victory. The Blue Hose
opened the game on a 22-11 run and held a double figure lead
throughout the first half. PC shot 48.1% in the first half while
Catawba shot equally well at 45.2%, but PC dominated the boards
at 22-13. Presbyterian got a big first half out of their
starting backcourt of juniors Bonnie Werner
(Kennesaw, Ga.) and Haskins. Werner and Haskins combined for
29 of PCs 45 first half points with Werner tallying 13 points
and Haskins leading all scorers with 16. PC took advantage at
the free throw line hitting 17-of-18 free throw attempts in the
first frame. Catawba was led by senior guard Lynn Morancie (Houston,
TX) who tallied nine points. Catawba
opened the second half on a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 47-41
with 16:42 remaining. The Lady Indians cut the lead to 48-44 at
the 13:16 mark on a layup by junior center Danyel Locklear (Pembroke,
N.C.). That would be as close as the Lady Indians would get as
the Blue Hose responded by
dominating the backboards 45-34 and hit eight-of- 14 free throws
in the second half to hold off the Lady Indian rally. Joining
Haskins for scoring honors with the Blue Hose was Werner who
tallied 16 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds while
freshman forward Rebecca
Wessinger (Laurens, S.C.) added 12 points. Catawba was led by Morancies 14 points while senior forward Dorthell Little (Rockingham, N.C.) added 11 points and Locklear tallied 10 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Ashley Cox (Richmond, Va.) rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 points. |
