JCSU
PUTS FIVE PLAYERS IN DOUBLE FIGURES
IN WIN OVER BLUE HOSE
CHARLOTTE,
NC — Johnson C.
Smith’s Joi Surratt
scored 21 points and dished out three assists in a thrilling
89-73 win over the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College. In the
home opener for the Lady Golden Bulls, four other starters also
scored in double figures, Terri Edwards had 17, Lauren Goss - 15, Annie
DeRoy - 12 and Adrine
Pettaway chipped in 11.
The
Golden Bulls (5-1) were rather consistent as they shot over 50%
in both halves. Turnovers really hurt the Blue Hose (4-6) as
they committed 22 compared to seven for JCSU. The Bulls turned
those turnovers into 31 points. Senior guard Billie
Haskins (Greensboro, Ga.) scored an amazing 28 points,
hitting 6 of 15 long balls to help bring her team to within 3
points late in the second half. However, the quicker JCSU team
would not let that last long as quickly stretched the lead to 14
points and would not look back.
The
Lady Golden Bulls broke open a tight first half with a 6-0 run
to push their lead to 26-16 at the 8:48 mark. JCSU extended
their lead to 15 points (39-24) three minutes later, but PC
responded with a 13-4 run to finish the first half, cutting the
lead to 43-37 entering intermission. Both teams shot well in the
first half as JCSU hit 19-of-38 field goals for 50.0% while PC
hit 16-of-31 for 51.6%. JCSU took advantage of 11 first half
Blue Hose turnovers to hold the lead.
In
the second half, PC made an early run and cut the lead to only
two points at 57-55 on a layup by redshirt sophomore Dana Birnie (Suwanee, Ga.) at the
11:26 mark. The lead stayed in single figures over the next
three minutes with the Blue Hose cutting the lead to three
points at 65-62 on a jumper by Birnie.
JCSU
clamped down on defense and went on a 8-0 run to push the lead
to double figures at 73-62 with 5:35 remaining. PC would make
one final push and cut the lead to six points at 77-71 on a pair
of free throws from Haskins at the 2:58 mark, but JCSU would
respond with a 12-2 run to finish out the game and secure the
victory.
Joining
Haskins for scoring honors was Birnie and redshirt junior
forward Lauren
Yanik (Greer, S.C.) who each scored 11 points with Yanik
tallying a game-high 12 rebounds. Birnie added seven rebounds
and five assists.
