CATAWBA’S LOCKLEAR LEADS LADY INDIANS TO
85-62 WIN OVER PRESBYTERIAN IN SAC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ACTION SALISBURY,
NC --
Catawba College senior forward
Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) led three Lady Indians in
double figures with a game-high 17 points and added eight
rebounds en route to an 85-62 victory over the visiting
Presbyterian College Blue Hose in South Atlantic Conference
women’s basketball action at Goodman Gymnasium on Wednesday
night. The first half opened with PC taking an early 6-2 lead on a pair of
three- pointers from senior guard
Bonnie Werner (Kennesaw,
Ga.). Catawba would respond with 18-4 run over the next six
minutes to take a 20-10 lead at the 11:27 mark. Lady Indian
senior guard Aisha
Stewart (Topeka, KS) fueled the run with a pair of
three-pointers. Late in the half, Catawba went on a 21-9 run
to take a 41-23 lead at the half. The Lady Indians shot 53.3% from the field in the first half while
holding the Blue Hose to only seven-of-30 shooting from the
field for 23.3%. Stewart led the Lady Indians with nine points
while Werner paced PC with six points. In the second half, Catawba pushed their lead to it’s largest
margin, 27 points, at 57-28 on a jumper by junior guard Ashley Cox (Richmond, Va.) at the15:27 mark. The Blue Hose came
alive and went on a 16-4 run over the next four minutes to cut
the lead to 59-44 with 10:55 remaining keyed by seven points
from sophomore center Cameron
Cook (Greensboro, N.C.). PC would not get any closer
as the Lady Indians clamped down on defense and held the Blue
Hose to only 18 points the rest of the way and went on to take
the 85-62 victory. Joining Locklear for Lady Indian scoring honors was Stewart with 16
points and Cox, with 15 points and six assists. The Blue Hose were led by Werner’s team-high 15 points on
five-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc to go along with three
assists. Cook added 13 points and eight rebounds while
sophomore forward Wesley
Campbell (Greenville, S.C.) came off the bench to tie
a season-high with 11 points and tied a career-high with eight
rebounds. The Lady Indians return to action on Saturday, January 31 when they host the Lady Eagles of Carson-Newman College at 2:00 pm while Presbyterian returns home to host the Lady Indians of Newberry College also on Saturday at 2:00 pm. |
